I have a 1991 F350 4x4 that started life as a single rear wheel truck. It then went to Rollalong and went through a conversion process. One of the things they did , was turn it into a dually by adding wheel spacers and fender flares. For a variety of reasons, I want to make it a "true" dually... tire & wheel options, brakes, strength etc. etc. My questions are: What is my axle now?, (it does not appear to be a Dana of any type). Is a 2 wheel drive dually form that same year my only option for a swap? I would also like to know about the ABS system, Does the doner axle have to have the ABS as well,? if so, are they all the same (dually & non dually, 2 & 4 wheel drive) & what will it do to the trucks computer if anything at all? I would love to hear that a late model ( 2000 era) Dana axle would bolt right in, but I'm sure there are too many differences between my 91 and new. As you can see, I am new to the FTE site & since I can't seem to get the answers at any of the local shops or from the guys (mechanics) at the dealership, I thought I might ask all you Ford gurus.
Why are you feeling the need to make your truck a true Dually??
Are you going to start really loading it up to the max GVW??
Most of these aftermarket companies use good quality parts when making a conversion, and in my opinion will do the job that they were designed for, you've already got an F350, so you've most likely got a 10k GVW rated truck already.
I think you'll be fine using your truck up to the max GVW just as it is without going to all the trouble of swapping rear ends.
I want to put an 8000 lb Santek 5th wheel trailer that is designed to carry my jeep inside, (another 4500 lbs) similar to a "Weekend Warrior" . I also want to get bigger tires on the truck, & a spacer is usually needed to accomplish this on a dually ... well, I already have a spacer from the conversion. The axle that is in my truck now seems to have a seal problem that I can't be identified (fixed several times and it just keeps failing) and as a result, it leaks & gets all over the drum. I don't need to tell you the problems with that alone. Maybe this housing was not machined properly to begin with. Anyway, all this together, dually w/ pizza cutters, a heavy load, in sand ... you get the picture. I just want to learn about all the options available to me. I am trying to fix up what I have so I don't have to purchase a $45,000 new model. (I can't afford the payments).
I might be wrong but your rear axle should be a Srterling 10.25". Also on 1991 I do not think the ABS even goes to your back axle, I might be wrong but on my old truck it did not.
LOL.. I have the opposite problem. I have a 1991 F150 Im converting to a mudd truck and Ive come across a 1990 F350 dually chassis. I wanted the front axle only and the guy wants to sell me the whole chassis. Anyways, Im trying to convert my dually chassis to a single wheel and just want to change the rear axle and add my cab and bed if it fits. In your case, I think 1995F1504x4 is correct, the 1991 F350 came with the sterling 10.25 as I have this same axle for my F150 out of a 1991. I dont know the answer to your question directly, but maybe together we can figure it out. The guy Im buying the dually chassis from is taking measurements for my and emailing them to me on monday along with pictures. I can forward some of the pictures of the rear portion to you just so you can see what a 1990 true dually rear looks like component wise. I can also forward the spring center to center measurements as well as this might be the only problem you may have (I dont know about drive shaft length though as this axle is a dana 70). Let me know if you interested in the measurements and pictures.
The axle seals for the 10.25 up to '93 or so had a habbit of leaking. Ford revised the seal in 93-94 and it will fit earlier models. There were several threads on this site about it.
The new S/D housing(10.5 sterling) will fit, but they changed the standard lug pattern to metric, you will need new rims.
All thats different from a standard 350 to a dually is the rear wheels and tires and the front spacer and wheel. The tires are what up the GVW. more plys were standard. the front axle was spaced to accept the same wheel as on the back. You have a true dually. No other diffrences.
