No error code

Hi
I bought a used Escape Hybrid, 2006 with 105,000 miles. It has been wonderful so far.
Recently the warning signal chimes and the "wrench: icon appears on the dash.
This happens only once in a while, but came on a few times today.
I was gonna change the oil, and while I was there mentioned it to the clerk, and she got the code reader and checked for codes, and to my surprise there were none.
What gives?

Oh, is it a big job to replace plugs, and should I replace wires/coils yet?

The "clerk" probably had a "code reader" that isn't capable of reading some of the codes.

The wrench icon is in addition to to the MIL on your cluster. I haven't looked into the hybrid systems yet, but it would be my guess that the wrench indicator likely relates to a fault in something other than the OBDIII system.

Right, the "wrench" icon codes can't be read with a generic code reader or even lots of readers that claim to use Ford extended codes.

No error codes

Pardon my ignorance, but I don't know what MIL or OBDII mean and couldn't find a list.
What I'm getting from this is that there are layers of codes and only certain readers are capable of reading them, and the clerk had the wrong one, and I probably have to go to the dealer.
Does that sound right?

MIL is Malfunction Indicator Light/Lamp.

OBD-II is On Board Diagnostic. OBD-I is/was the first version, not sure when that started but became OBD-II around 1995/1996.

Only high end code reader or scanner will read all the codes in a vehicle. Of course, the dealer can read all of them for a price.
