What is the best way to install the back window on my 58? The rubber looks good...is it just a matter of poping the old one out and purtting the new one in?
I've not done one myself but I did help a friend. There are special tools you can use (basically a T handle with a hook on it) to help you pry the lip of the rubber gasket over the edge but we just used a length strong cord/rope. You put the rubber around the glass and then wrap the window with the rope/cord (seated in the channel) starting with the middle of the lower portion of the window so that the ends of rope end up at the top center facing the inside of the cab. Place the window in the opening bottom edge first from the outside. Then push the edge at the top center in and hold with pressure. You need someone to help. The person assisting applies pressure to the top of the window from the outside. You are inside the cab facing rearward and you pull the rope on the right side toward the drivers side of the cab and the left end of the rope toward the passenger side of the cab so that it pulls the lip of the rubber over the lip in the window. Person on outside keeps pressure on the window to help seat it in the lip. As you get to the bottom middle, the rope/cord will be removed and the last of the rubber will be pulled over the lip.
Sorry about long winded explanation. Hopefully it makes sense not confuses you more.
Also, you should really use a new rubber gasket as they are much more flexible and it will make installing the window way easier.
I just re read that and I'm not sure if it makes any sense whatsoever. Sorry... Ah hell, just take it to a glass shop Wait a minute, that's why we post here... We don't take the easy way out right???
Wilson,
Just a word of warning. Old glass is VERY brittle. If you are talking about a 'big window wrap around rear glass' be extra cautious, as this window is rare and getting expensive. If it's just the standard flat glass, any glass shop can cut you a replacement.
Anyway, make sure you have 2 or 3 'helpers'. To avoid breaking the glass at removal, cut the inside lip off the old rubber molding first. Very carefully guide it out the back, with NO twisting or flexing motion.
When it comes time to reinstall, first warm up the new rubber molding to make it super flexible, place it around the glass and lube the outer lip up real well with a lubricant like dish soap. If you are talking about the curved big back glass be very careful when you are working with the curved sides. Do not push down on the ends to 'force' them into place. This is where patience comes into play. You have to evenly work your way around.
Good Luck!
Brett
Thanks for the information...... The one in it now (flat one) is cracked in several places so I'll just remove it.... I went to the junk yard on Saturday and took one out of a 59 (big pain)....weather stripping was bad and sticky....so if the weather stripping is good on my 58 can I reuse it? Thanks Again...
57 throu 60 trucks flat back windows are in backwards they were built that way. The window is removed from the inside and installed from the inside. The fat part of the rubber is to the inside and also covers the headliner. The small part of the rubber goes to the outside. The out side is were you want to rap your rope around crossing at the bottom. Then set the window on the bottom grove on the inside have some one put slight pressure on it. Then start pulling the rope out from the bed side of the truck evenly on both sides. If your old rubber is still plyable than you should be able to use it. Soapey water helps also. I hope I made sense.
