hey guys, im looking to wake up my new to me 460. i got about a grand to play with. the big block is new to me, haven't messed with one before. if you guys could give me some tips or tricks that would be great. i know with my 351 i advanced the timing a few degrees and it made quite an improvement, can the same be done for the 460?
The biggest restriction on the 460 is the heads. If you get them ported you will see huge gains, but you will also need a MAF conversion or a stand alone ECU.

thanks, i should have mentioned i dont wana go into the motor, i just want simple bolt ons that will wake this thing up a bit. ive done a bit of searching and it seems headers and full exhaust are good for a bit of power. i need to do those anyway was the exhaust on the truck is pretty rigged. also read about the "horns" in the intake, ill be addressing those.
as far as headers what does everyone recommend? ive had bad expierences with long tubes on other vehicles, like the starter being a pain in the *** to get out.
Long tube are great and will help the motor out quite a bit. However, you should know that they're illegal in all 50 states. If you have or will have emissions testing I wouldn't recommend this.
Doug Thorley makes California (and thus 50 state) legal headers for 460s. Neighbor has them. He also had a chip, but had to pull it as he couldn't get it to run right. I think he bought a cheapo or something. But the headers work.
You should get the exhaust port nubs ground out, they restrict the exhaust flow. It's really easy and fast, especially if the engine is out of the truck.
Thorley makes CARB certified long tube headers for these trucks. That with a two into one 3" exhaust is a great upgrade.
It is the single best thing you can do for these trucks. Be aware that the manifold bolts like to break off on removal.
Banks also makes a power pack for these that includes headers, intake, and full exhaust.
You can also cut the silencer out of the intake tubing, and drill the air box for more airflow. That helps a little bit. Advancing timing also does wonders.
In my experience, almost any high mileage 460 needs a good cleaning (or replacement) of injectors. While it's not necessarily a true performance upgrade, it'll feel like one after getting used to driving around with the engine continually running lean.
thanks guys, those headers are damn pricey. does anyone know if they are stainless? ive never herd any bad things about dough thorleys either. how is the installation of them?
i bumped the timing up to about 13* this after noon and it seems to have made a good difference. i went to cut the intake horn things people have mentioned and some one already beat me to it. the truck has a fresh K&N drop in as well.
one thing that deters me from the exhaust is the breaking of studs/bolts. god i hate drilling those things.
as far as replacing the injectors whats a good source?
also i read a few times the bigger bbk throttle body makes a good improvement, thoughts?

is this something i can do while im installing the headers? pretty self explanatory when i take the manifolds off?
You don't need a flow bench to clean and polish the the ports and remove casting flaws. You only need a flow bench if you want to measure the improvement.

I'd like to know where that info came from. I have never owned and I don't plan to ever own a legal truck. However, there are very few laws up here, especially in WY and I doubt that is one of them. As long as the cat was left in place I don't know how headers vs. manifolds would change your emissions level.
