1951 F1: VIN & Chassis # and other infos for a rookie

hello!

first of all - sorry about my bad english

my name is daniel, i´am from austria, 35 years old, a big ford classic car fan and since 30 day´s the owner of a

1951 F1 Pickup
226 cui
GVWR: 4700 lbs
engine #: 7HA6050-C2



on the following pic you see my

- my friend jackson
- my daughter laura (4yo)
- my son noah (6 month old)
- me



current i also owned a 68 mustang

now i must collect the following information for the agency here in austria to get the license for my f1:

- axle load limit
i only have the curb weight (front 1860 lbs, rear 1360 lbs) without the payload (1.480 lbs). but i must know, how much of the 4700 are on the front and how much are on the rear.

maximum speed
yes this is correct - the agency need the maximum speed from the f1

and now my "big problem" - the VIN:

the vin on title is:

F1HIC15A85

and on the car (firewall passenger side) i found following #:

F1HIKC15485 - what kind of number is this?

where on the vehicle is the vin located?

PLEASE HELP ME

Daniel,

Welcome to the board.

Your government really demands a lot to register a vehicle. Unfortunately, I don't have the answers to your question, other than the VIN, it's the number you got off the firewall. The "K" might have been a misstamp, these old Fords aren't known for having a high standard of quality control on the assembly line. As for top speed it's only a guess, depending on the engine and transmission, but I would say 50-55 mph is a comfortable top speed for a stock F-1 with a V-8 and 3 speed transmission.

I am sure there will be others jumping in with the answers you're looking for.

BTW, you have a really beautiful truck, yes, even though it has a manure spreader grill.

Welcome to the forum! That is a beautiful truck, and a wonderful family you have. Thank you for sharing your photos.

It looks to me as someone mis-read the VIN at some time and mis-typed the information on your title. The number on the plate sounds correct for your truck. It decodes as;

F1 = half ton pickup (F-1)
H = 226 6 cylinder engine
1 (I) = 1951 (Ford stamped I for the number 1)
KC = Kansas City assembly plant
15485 = the consecutive unit number

You can see the similarities between the title and your data plate, where they left off the K, and transposed the letter A for a 4.

If you look on the top of the frame rail on the right side (passenger side) under the hood near the motor mount, you should find the VIN frame stamp there. Lets hope that matches your other numbers.

Daniel - My welcome too. Below are Ford documents that I believe give authoritative answers to your questions. First is from the Ford Truck Chassis Parts and Accessories Catalog, 1948-1954. I scanned the cover for your government agency to see that it is an official document, and scanned the page that describes the 1951 VIN/Rating Plate data explanation. The data plate pictured might not look exactly like the plate that should be attached to your glove box/dispatch box door. As explained on the page, Ford changed the plate design in the latter part of 1951. The data, however, will be the same. The VIN is, as Bob and Wayne have said, the F1H1KC15485. You will find that number stamped into the frame rail on the right/passenger side inside the engine compartment. Normally it is located near the engine mount cross member.

The next three scans are from the 1951 Ford Truck Handbook. It is a dealer or salesman's guide that is not a commonly available reference. I scanned the cover page for your government to see the 6-1-51 publication date. Also scanned is the Load Capacity Chart that gives axle weight ratings, 2,500 pounds front and 3,000 pounds rear. Last is the Performance Table that gives maximum speed for each model and engine/rear axle combination. If you have a 3.92/1 rear axle ratio it shows top speed 64.8 m.p.h., or 59.6 m.p.h. if you have the 4.27/1 ratio. Hoping these documents satisfy your governing authority. If more information is needed, please say. Stu

one question about the axle rating:

why are the total (front and rear) 5,500 lbs and the GVW only 4,700 lbs?

I think the authorities want to be satisfied with the documents.

The individual axles would have been rated for more than their share of the total GVWR. Sort of like being over constructed.

As for getting a corrected title, in the US it wouldn't be hard. At least in my state, I'd have to have a law officer inspect the truck and certify that the change was warranted. In your case it's hard to say. I'd suggest getting guidance from your authorities. Stu

Beautiful truck! Wlecome to the forum!

I have a similar situation with a motorcycle over here. The title is correct in every regard except it says "1965" when the VIN decodes to a '69. Based on many things, it is truly a '69, but someone back when everything was done on paper typed the wrong number. I've been to the State DMV and they went back as far as they could, and found it said '65 all the way back to the '80's when they computerized. So it "clearly" wasn't their mistake, and basically said, screw you (me).

Over here you can get a completely new title, as a "special construction", or a bonded title which means you buy title insurance in case someone later comes along to say it's theirs. Make friends with your local officials, it will pay off. Or if you are an Automobile Club member, see if they can help.

Nice looking truck!

When you get the title issue straightened out, you may want to replace the hood side moldings with the correct 1951 moldings. Your current moldings are from a 1952 model and are different than 1951 moldings.

First, welcome to the FTE! When I bought mine, I found an error with the title. I had to have an inspection done on the my truck. Then I had to take the report and the title to my DMV and they issued a new title with the corrections.

This is the correct 51 hood molding (non 5 Star Deluxe).




Just for reference, this is what a 52 molding looks like.




I have several sets of the 51 hood side moldings. PM or email me if you're interested.

Where is that frame rail Vin # spot located? im trying to locate the vin on my frame rail on what i thought was my 48 ford panel everyones telling me its a 51....
