Wiring issues

Hey everyone, this is my first post so if i mess up let me know. I just picked up an 86 F-350 and it needed some work. I already got the carb put in and it works but a problem that the original owner had comes up still. After running the truck for about 1 mile or so it just shuts off. The original owner said there's potentially a short in the wiring going to the starter solenoid. If anyone knows how to fix this please let me know.

Thanks

Hey Deviant95,

Welcome to the forum!

You might want to start off by telling which engine you have. When it shuts off, can it immediately be restarted? Are there any other symptoms, like gauges not working or the smell of gas?

It could be the ignition module. I'm not sure but it may be on the side of the distributor, when they get hot they start acting up.

My 85 300/6 did that when I got it, ran until the motor warmed up then stopped. Was the ignition module mounted on the side of the distributor breaking down when hot that was causing it. Replaced the module and not a problem sense.

I think there is a kit to relocate the module to the fender. Or perhaps it could be relocated with a little work.

its a 460 big block, and i cant start it anymore cuz the battery died. but when the battery wasnt dead i could start it. and then it would die a lil while after and then start right up again. but what i noticed is that the starter solenoid would get kinda warm.

There are ways to fix the odometer.... or you could swap it for another one.

Re: your truck shutting off once it warms up.
You will see an aluminum box about 5X5X1.75" on the drivers side inner fender well.
There are three 10mm bolts underneath, inside the wheel well.
Unscrew these and look at the bottom of the box.
Is the plastic filler all bubbly or running out?

If so, your ignition module is likely shorting out.

Sir, run your truck at idle. If the coil is hot to the touch, that's your problem. Once it cools it runs again.

Ignition module is a very comon problem for the type symptoms described. Especially the TFI-IV with distributor mounted module.

There was a kit to relocate this module, since obsolete. Seen a few in the junkyards, if interested on relocating it to the firewall.

I don't think a F-350 460 had a TFI in 1986.

But whatever module there is could very well be failing when warm.

DS-II modules had simular overheating problems, but not as severe.
