Rust!
I have a 1984 ford with a 4.9 straight 6. Strong motor so I want to Por 15 the frame. I got the bed off but I have the typical fender rust and behind the back tire rocker area ( in front of the rear bumper). I can get patch panels and weld but I'm not very confident in welding exterior thin metal..Should I over lap the new metal on top of the old metal after I cut away the rusted area? Or should I cut away the rust and use a flangeing tool? Or have the two piece of metal meet completely flush and just tack weld and lay a bead around the new panels ...Suggestions on how to do body work would be great any websites how to s pictures videos be great!

Any overlapping or flanging will only create pockets for dirt and moisture to collect and start the process over again. I would suggest butt welding. Here is a good thread on welding in patch panels.

I've had good success flanging, using countersunk rivets and panel adhesive. The adhesive fills all the voids so no place for moisture to get in. I did this before I trusted my welding skills.
