Honk Honk!!

I am looking for a thread on repairing my horn ground. My Steering Shaft is not grounded so the horn switch can not operate.

The shaft sticking out of the steering box is not grounded either, so I would guess that the gears are worn in the steering box and make intermitment contact with the shaft therefore running a wire from one side of the shaft to the other will not work.

Any ideas or threads, suggestions on putting some kind of brush on the steering shaft to ground it?

I'm thinking of using a ABS winding siwtch on the shaft under the hood.

Hate to replace the steering box......

Within the rag joint is a flat piece of metal that make this ground connection between steering shaft and steering gear box. Is it possible this joint needs to be slid up on steering gear box shaft so that the flat piece of metal touches gear box? This was my recent problem after replacing rag joint.

I run a 79 Bronco steering wheel on my 73 and had the same problem....Try this before ya buy a replacement steering box:

Look at the steering column shaft coming out of the firewall. It connects to an intermediate shaft and then to the rag joint at the steering box. Sometimes the intermediate steering shaft has an isolated sleeve so it can collapse in the event of a head-on collision. The intermediate shaft is also electrically isolated from the steering box by the rag joint.

Bridge the isolated sections with a lengths of 16g wire and open termininals. Install the terminals under the nut or bolt heads 180 degrees out from each other and with wire in between wrapped around the bridged section like an "S". This will provide the needed slack when the steering is turned one way or the other.

Here's a pic. See the red terminal and the black wire?

Honk yer horn in celebration!!!... and how about sending me some rep points if successful? Honk! Honk!

Thanks for the input Hio Silver. When I take the steering shaft off of the steering box and probe the shaft comming out of the steering box; there is no ground.

I would think that the box is horribly bad b/c of that but it drives fine and has no play in it.

Thanks so much for the help!!
