You might just be better off buying a car to make the trip, or selling the truck to buy a car. I'm an optimist when it comes to these trucks and their reliability, but safety comes first. In addition to the transmission and brakes, there might be other issues that could arise when you start on your trip.
A rental car might be a good idea too. You could leave the truck where it's at and just come back to it when you're out of college, or back home visiting.
Believe me, there's alot of things I want to do with my truck too. I want to someday make a 650 mile trip (each way) from Texas to Kansas City, MO in it, but I know that before I can do that, I have to make sure that everything is in good enough shape to make it. I've got a long way to go but someday it'll get there.
This may seem stupid.. But ive pulled out and put in trannys.. But how do you fill the converter before you put it in.. And draining the coolant lines.. How do i do that? Ha i just want to double check before i do anything wrong.. I was planning on doing all of this when i go to UTI saturday and learn it there.. Not in a personal experience on my own truck. Ha
I get that.. I just put to much work to have it sit.. It made a 200 mile trip with no hesitation or no problems less then a month ago.. I just.. Was wheeling my 2wd truck constantly and when i almost got stuck threw it in reverse then when it was floored threw it in first... That hsppened alot.. Mostly soft sand.. So i abused the tranny.. But i learnex my lesson but im just to stubborn to leave my truck here
I understand completely, but you gotta ask yourself if you're able to afford having to fix the truck all through the trip if stuff were to break.
My truck was left to me by my dad who passed away, and I'm like you, I absolutely LOVE taking it places. I baby that truck and have spend who knows how much money on it over the years....I've got tons of plans for it. But I know its limits, what I can do before I have issues, and my own limits enough to know when to park it and take something else, in order to avoid spending a ton of money or getting stranded.
I'm just trying to help you make the best, most informed decision, man. I don't mean to sound so negative. But it is just my suggestion that you should at least look at other forms of transportation for that trip, so that you get there safely.
Yeah i get that.. Its just.. Im way to stubborn.. So i picked up the tranny.. It was froma 90s model truck with a 302.. Not a c4 but the measurements still came up right and everything.. Will i still be able to use it or no? I only have the time for one transmission..
In comparison to the cost of a rebuild of a C4 or C6, that could end up being the cheaper route to go. Locally I can have mine rebuilt for about $800 including a shift kit and new torque converter, but I don't know about his area.
Well i thought about it.. And i need the money for college.. Im giving back the transmission.. My sisters going to driveme to college for gas money and ill just buy a bike since its sacramento.. Gonna save money on insurance and gas and just save up.
I know you won't enjoy that bike like you would your truck....but it'll work out for the best real quick. You'll be able to come back and do MUCH more to your truck than you would if you took it on this trip.
