Well i bought a car today and its the first non ford i have bought in years. But it was a good deal and just the thing my daughter needed. A Kia Reo but the only thing about it is i got to go to dallas tx. to get it or have it shipped to me. I was thinking about flying up and picking it up and that would give me a axcuse to go see the grand canyon heck i'll be over half way there anyway. So i was hoping yall could give me some advice on a few places too go see on my trip. I'm getting old boys and i want to see a few things while i can get around .
Dale, for a real adventure, pack a duffel bag and stick out your thumb.Only accept rides from drivers of Ford vehicles.Bum a couple dollars from each one who picks you up,tell them you're getting a head-start on next years' Burning Man.Post updates/photos as you travel.LOL!
Grand canyons a long ways from texas, but hell. Go see it! Then go drive from durango Co to silverton co that's an amazing drive over the san juan mts. A drive you won't soon forget, plus do it in the next few weeks and see the great fall colors.
That's a durn long drive back from AZ! Certainly, road trips are typically memorable - but, there's alot of low memory miles between Dallas and the Canyon. Your call - if it were mine, I would fly to AZ and rent a ride.
Its only 1056 miles from dallas were i pick up the car to the grandcanyon. Right down the middle of new mex. KIA should get about 36 mpg. Thats bout 29 gal. of gas. Lots of arrowheads over that way if ya know were to look. i HAVE ALWAYS HAD A NAX FOR FINDING THEM. Over 350 in my tee pee already. Jim hope you and the wife got a nice tan and had a great honeymoon.
If I were driving in the SW I would get on old Route 66 and see as much of it, and the roadside attractions as possible. I know you can't drive the whole length, but I have always wanted to drive SOME of it. Preferably in a hotrod or old Ford truck maybe.....
That was the first plan Tinman i wanted to drive my 67 fastback on the roadtrip but being i'm going out to pick up the KIA guess thats the new plan. Maybe i'll have it shipped home and take the mustang just don't know what my plans are just yet. Heck may take the 51 sure would be lot more fun . It will cost 536.00 to have the KIA shipped. Heck i built it to drive so tinman you bout talked me into it. Be lots easyer to pick up a stripper to keep me company in the stang or the 51. LOL LOL She could work here and there to pay for the gas.

Hey Dale,
Flagstaff Az is a nice western town - lot's to explore & it's right "next door" to the Grand Canyon. We made the trip back from there to Austin TX last summer - hmmm.. The best part of the trip was coming into ABQ/Santa Fe from the west - just beautiful canyons & rock cliffs -visit the petrified forest & The Painted Desert. This is arrowhead country - it's got your name written all over it. If you come back the southern route out in West Texas we have Marfa/Alpine nestled in the Guadelupe Mountains. It's pretty open country - if you stay on the interstates it's extremely boring - get off the beaten path & explore.
I can't really give you any suggestions between Dallas and FL, but like others have said if west of Dallas then the painted desert, petrified on up to grand canyon for sure. I usually vacation in Sedona AZ cause it is just so gorgeous a country. I'm a science geek, so I had to go up to Flagstaff and catch the Percival Lowel Observitoray and the Route 66 car show.
Back to the in between, you going to keep south and efficient or take long leasurely route? ... graceland - got a thing for the King?... New Orleans.

Personal opinion, there are better US highways than what's left of 66. For this trip, heading west on US 60 over into AZ, then north, is much more scenic. It is downright desolate west of Datil NM, but beautiful mountain country, then dropping off the Mogollon Rim, then an easy shot north thru the White Mountains up to the GC.
All that's left of the Real Route 66 in NM is bits and pieces of the original alignment, mostly in terrible shape. Around Albuquerque, I swear there are 4 or 5 different versions of Rte 66, based on different years they were constructed. One runs N - S thru ABQ, some run E - W, some just don't seem to go anywhere. Just trying to capitalize on the mystique.
To someone from Florida, I-40 from Amarillo to Flagstaff has it's own beauty, I guess I'm just a little sick of it myself. Too many trucks, too. Lots of people get killed along there.
