how do you test if your PCM or IDM is bad?? I was driving down the road the other day and the truck just shutoff and has not been able to start since. it was running just fine prior except lately in the morning it would act like it had bad fuel. It would run crappy and a few times die but restart after some cranking and then run just fine for the rest of the day. it did this only in the mornings. I thought it might be condensation build up?? When it finally died there was no DTC codes, no CEL nothing not even a stumble or hick up. I checked fuel pressure and its getting 50-60 psi when cranking, I changed the fuel filter about a week earlier, I drained the fuel bowl and the fuel pump refilled it, I cleaned of the little fuel screen( it was plugged) still no start, checked all the fuses, unplugged the IPR and tried it. I have replaced the valve cover wiring harness about a year ago, along with new glow plugs
I just had to have my IDM replaced along with the valve cover gaskets. Truck just up and died going down the road. Would crack, but wouldn't start. From what I found, the wiring to the injectors that run though the valve cover gaskets has been known to fail due to the heat. Ford didn't insulate the wires to well on the originals. This may have shorted and caused the IDM to fail. Ford's OEM IDM was not sealed and has an issue of moisture getting in and causing shorts also. The only code that came up on my reader was a CAM shaft sensor error. It took a good reader from the shop to find the exact problem. If it is your IDM, check online for replacements. I got mine from pensacoladiesel.com
