I live in Ohio right by lake eire. I bought my truck from texas so i honeslty dont know how the heater bowl is working. how i know where my plug in cord is located. but how do i test to make sure its worknig? i just replaced the GPR what else should i test to make sure my trucks garenteed to start when the snow falls?
Thanks
Most of us are not running the fuel bowl heater, so dont' worry about that one.
The cord for the block heater starts right above the oil filter.
If you have a 97, it's possible you do not have a block heater and would need to purchase one and install it. It was an option in 97.
When it gets cool out, you'll know if the GP's are working by how rough your truck is starting.
If you want to check before hand, you can remove the VC's and inspect all the harnesses that go to the GP's and use an ohm meter to test them while the truck is off.
On the VC gasket and harnesses, you would be inspecting for burnt pins or melted plastic, which is something that can happen on these trucks though none of us are sure what causes it yet.
Pee man, the fuel bowl heater isn't really necessary. I'm up in Manitoba and the temps regularly dip in to the -40s every winter. As for the GP's check em out early just like Talyn said. If they're bad, order a new set from Jim at Rosewood diesel. Good price, good product. The other things would be strong batteries, a healthy starter, and as I found out last winter full synthetic oil is really helpful.
A buddy of mines a diesel tech and told me to check my glow plugs and heater bowl. but yeah i have 2 newer batteries starter has been replaced a littlewhile ago. but what do i need to use to check the glow plugs? my harneses are like wrapped in electric tape. is that factory?
What temp does diesel fuel gel?
and do you guys put anything in your tanks to help?

The schaefers anti gel is good. but they put additives in the fuel in the winter time to help keep it from gelling as well.
I've never had any gelling issues using 2 stroke either. *shrugs*
The fuel bowl heater is good to go on the SD's, but on the OBS's it can cause some issues when it breaks, so we just all pitch them and throw it out of the equation.
You check the glow plugs at the VC harness, no need to un-tape the lines.
I'd love to give you better help on this, but I have never attempted to Ohm them out myself.
You just need an Ohm meter to test the resistance of the glow plug. Somebody else will have to give you the rest of the info.
My 81 Rabbit gelled on me once at -40. It would idle but not make power. I put a electric heater under the fuel tank and used a fusee (flare)on the fuel filter and away I went. Late for work though but they didn't care, not very many were making it and they were glad I could make it. LOL
