2001 Expedition, Rough idle...Loooong post, PLEASE HELP!!
01 Exped, 5.4L 4wd, 95,000 miles
Recently had some major work done on it. Intake manifold failed at the water crossover tube, replaced that as well as, had the plugs replaced.
Last week, some problems with the intake manifold. Apparently the manufactuer suggests plugging a tube right on water the crossover that is not utilized. It was a simple rubber plug/cap held in place with a clamp. I had only had 480 miles on my truck till this plug failed, caused a fountain of coolant to spew everywhere!
Took it back to the shop, they contacted the manufacturer and they suggested a new plug with a metal insert to prevent any reoccurance....
Installed plug, they go to burp it....truck don't start. They troubleshoot, tell me the fuel pump has mysteriously gone bad--whatever! I don't have the time to argue or question it because I need my truck repaired ASAP.
They install the new fuel pump...I get in and immediately notice the rough idle and my engine check light is on. Again, no time for me to ask a million questions because I need to hit the road ASAP!
My truck idles at 700-725 RPM but, but idles really bad. Sounds as if the muffler has holes in it and I've noticed the tail pipe shakes pretty bad.
This didn't happen previous to the plug failing on water crossover tube.
I stopped by autozone on my way out of the state to have the codes run. Guy says "Bank 1 is lean"?? I asked if it's possibly emissons related, he says yes, probably an O2 sensor.
On my way out to Colorado, I notice the check engine light flashing every so often...holds steady then blinks 37 times.
What does this mean? Why does my truck idle like crap now? Fuel pressure problem? I didn't notice a power difference, just a slight stumble from stop to go....
Help me out guys! Once I get back home, which is 600 miles away--it's definitely going back to the shop for warranty work!
Do you remember what the code numbers were ? a bad misfire you pretty much feel all the time especially in over drive . You say you have no loss of power , just a stumble, hesitation stop and go. this issue along with your lean code could be anything from a dirty injector, vacuum leak,o2 sensor, or faulty fuel pressure or a dirty MAF sensor (which is common) hope this helps. its some the things to look at.
I don't remember the code number as it was just one that showed on the OBD tool, guy said was "bank 1 lean".
I went thru 2 full tanks of premium fuel on the way up to Colorado, as well as added a fuel additive to clean the injectors.
I will check the MAF sensor for being dirty.
Will a bad O2 sensor cause these types of problems?
Could the new fuel pump that was installed be the problem? Not sure if it's just unpack and install...or was there a process with fuel pressure adjustment involved
first i would clean the MAF, just to get it out of the way ,next i would try to get a peak at the fuel tank tank to see if any vapor lines are off and listen for a vacuum release sound when taking of gas cap which should not be there if all is good i suggest taking a fuel pressue reading at the fuel rails key on, running at idle ,and hold pressure 5 mins after shut down. the o2 sensors are a pain to check and a bigger pain to change i would leave that for last .hope this helps
