Of course only my friends here can appreciate this. Having completed the daily chores I headed off to drop off some mail at the Post Office. From there, I was headed across the street to pick up some grub at Fazzoli’s. When the light changed I looked off to the right to see some emergency vehicles approaching, about 3/8 of a mile back.
When the weather gets cooler there’s always a noticeable gain in power; especially on a supercharged vehicle. So I figure I can kill two birds with one stone: make it across the intersection in time and get the rush from the kick of some massive torque. I launched like a scalded dog only to feel that momentary slip that always occurs before the A4WD engages. I was still making good time across the intersection despite the loud bang and the sound of a thousand metallic squirrels beating the snot out of one another.
Did I pop another rod? Nope, no smoke and I’m still accelerating. But wait, the noise is coming from the rear. Did I bust the diff? Not likely on the Dana (what is it 90?). Having cleared the intersection, I let off and then it all became obvious. So I simply stop on the other side, crawl under, yank it out of the slip yoke and continue on my way to the drive thru.
I’ll be able to see all the damage come morning, but based on the sound, it can’t be pretty under there.
Ah, now it makes more sense: both trailing arms snapped at the body. I'm guessing this was first, followed by the driveshaft (I've yet to see a driveshaft fail when all the parts/geometry are correct). And of course where did I stop with the drivetrain upgrade? You guessed it.
