Lately I've noticed my dipstick is getting much harder to put back into the tube, it requires a lot of force and two hands. I had never noticed this before, but I was looking under the hood of a couple other 7.3 trucks and noticed the orientation of the dipstick is opposite of mine, you can read "Engine Oil" from the passanger side on my truck, whereas you read it on the driver's side on the others. The stick will not go into the tube on my truck so that it matches theirs, and I've noticed slightly varied readings on either side of the stick, the "Operating range" side with the writing always reads slightly different than the other side. So do I have an issue here?

I had the same problem. The dipstick tube bracket was slightly bent. Probably from laying on top of the engine. I just pushed rearward, toward frewall, on the dipstick tube about an inch or so. Now the dipstick glides in and out. Give that a try. Has helped a couple of others.

Thanks I will have to give that a go. But my other concern is the orientation of the dipstick level, I am worried I am getting inaccurate readings because mine is somehow backwards, but I'm not sure if that is just immaterial or not.
Thanks to PaysonPSD it will now glide effortlessly in either direction, all it needed was a very minor push. I'm betting it got a little bent when I installed the new up-pipes and turbo pedestal.
Don't worry about the orientation of the dipstick. Whichever way it slides in easiest will give you an accurate enough reading. Being a hair over or a hair under won't harm anything.

I put up with a "sticky" dipstick for about 6 months after doing an Early 99 to Late 99 conversion before I figured out the problem. Now after working under the hood I check the oil just to make sure the dipstick isn't sticking.
