fuel leak help

started smelling some raw fuel come through the ac when i would stop. i opened the hood and can see a small drip from the side of the fuel filter on the top of the engine. the arrows in the picture show where the fuel is leaking. Do i need to just replace this cover on the side or just the gasket. also how hard is this to do? talked to ford today and after 1.5 hours they wanted to $450 to do it and the service guy couldn't tell me much. out of curiosity i also asked how much to change the filters and he said $170???? kinda high for a 15 min job i thought.

If the cover plate is cracked, you need part # 3C3Z-9T517-AG

If it is just gasket/o-rings, you need part # 3C3Z-9C065-AA

$30 to $40 at TousleyFordParts.com

Easy job to install.

It's a really easy job I just did it recently takes about 30min. And you don't have to remove the fuel lines. I read that in a post somewhere but I was able to do it without removing them.

Just out of curosity, what dealership was this, and now you know why I don't let anyone in Arkansas touch my truck.

I would say that's pretty typical for the fuel filter change considering what the filters cost at a dealership and you get to pay for an hour's labor. $450 to change the fuel regulator gasket is just plain IGNORANCE on their part.

Looks like the fuel regulator gasket, but it may be your fuel filter cover gasket (o-ring) leaking. This is common when the o-ring is not changed at the time of a fuel filter service.

About 3k ago I changed the fuel filter and the oring it came with. How hard is it to line up the gasket on the side with out taking off the fuel line?

Well.......you have to deal with the spring loaded plunger/regulator while trying to get the gasket in place. IMHO you'd be time and money ahead to just take the fuel line off. I've reused the line gasket many times without replacing it. The keyhole gasket not so much.

LOL---I thought so. I used to work with the guys in the parts department. I was the parts manager at north point collision center (hence the NPCC). If you stop by parts for anything ask for Doug Z. and tell him Tim from Ft. Smith says, "Hello".

FWIW--Service has a great diesel tech that has been doing it for a VERY long time but he has no control over pricing. I would say that if they wanted $450 to do the cover gasket then the SA had his/her head stuck somewhere unmentionable. It would be very easy to do fuel filters and the gasket at the same time in much less than an hour but it obviously doesn't work that way.

when the o-ring for the secondary fuel filter was changed, was the o-ring lubed wif clean engine oil before installation? if not, it may have ripped on installation, since the cover has to be torqued back. tat might cause a leak.

just make sure that all o-rings are lubed and when covers go on, make sure all bolts are torqued to specs. u'll be fine.

Haynes manual has "Fuel Pressure Regulator Assembly 6.0" at 37 ft-lbs.

I don't believe this assembly is the cover. 37 ft-lbs seems a little big. In the write-up it calls it a cover and makes no mention of torque so I used blue-loctite and turned 'em till they felt tight.

Good write up here... Fuel Regulator Upgrade w/ Pictures - Diesel Forum - TheDieselStop.com

I did mine this way as I was also in the engine for other stuff.

One poster wrote that he bent the fuel line real good getting the line off the connector.
I used a 7/8" wrench to hold the connector shown in the 6th photo, and a 13/16" to disconnect the fuel line nut. It took a bit to move it. Initially had me scared I'd break something but just gave it more effort and it broke loose. I don't think it had been moved since the factory.

just snug......it doesn't take much, especially with a new gasket. The housing will strip and you'll be in deep stuff then.
