So, my truck hasnt been running up to par lately. The gas pedal isn't as responsive as it usually is. My fuel economy has dwindled off, despite the same commute to work, same driving habits, and filling up at the same gas station. A few days ago, as I was driving to work, I punched the pedal while doing about 65 on the freeway. The tranny downshifted, started to accelerate, and then fell on it's face. I let off the pedal, it shifted back, and drove fine.
When I got to work, I decide to tune the truck back to stock, and then reload my SRL tune. Since then, all the power is back, the gas pedal has great response and sensitivity again, the turbo seems to whistle/spool louder, and after fueling up my mpg's were up 1.3 to what I normally get. Im not sure if it's a fluke, but since reloading my tune (last time was about 4 months ago), it's alive again.
Strange, isn't it??? I've been told it should make no difference because the tune is burned onto the PCM. It's not like a magnetic floppy disc/tape, etc. I change tunes fairly often, but on long term tune runs I've noticed the same thing, but can't tell you why.
ive also noticed the difference too. or sometimes it feels like the power isnt there or it doesnt shift right. i reload the tune and bam! its like a rocket. someone needs to do some digging into this!
wow. thought i was alone on this. i have been thinking about reloading myself. guess i will maybe tomorrow when i get off work and see how it improves.
this is pretty fishy dont you say. are the computers smarter than we think they are? do they get used to how you drive it and get ammuned to it so when you do punch it, it only kicks. hmmmm. interesting.
Im running Matts SRL tune. My last truck was a Dodge (when i was younger and dumber), and it did the same thing with the Superchips programmer I was using. I figured it was just another Dodge problem, but I dont think it has anything to do with the tune/tuner. I think you guys are right, and it just adapts to a numb state after a while. Dont get me wrong, I still had power, just not the 'peppyness' off a fresh tune.
ill be watching this thread to see where it goes and who says what about it. i have read some people say to give her a wot about once a week or so to help clean everything up. that may could be a reason that some may not see the "slow down" that we are talking about. between that and the "kids" that are out there racing from every red light they pass. just something to keep in mind as we descuss this
im runnin TSD tunes right now which matt and TSD developed there base tunes together so i guess you could say im runnin matts tunes. anyways i wonder if its kinda like an optical allusion of our minds. maybe we get so used to it that we dont feel the power anymore but when we reload the tune it gives us a feeling that its back being that the trans goes back into the relearn stage and shifts harder. idk im just thinkin outside the box. im thinkin a good test might be though to have someone run down the track with a fresh tune on. then go back say a month later and try with the same tune and see if the numbers are slower. i know that weather and temp and all that play factors but sounds like a good test i think
I don't think it is just custom tunes. I've noticed the same thing when the batteries have been disconnected from my gasser vehicles. I think it is part of the adaptive learning.
I don't do tuners, but I would suggest to you guys that instead of reloading your tunes, you could try just doing the PCM reset routine, and see if the result isn't the same.
I realize that may not be any easier than just reloading a tune. But it would be an experiment worth doing.

I'm not tuned yet, but plan on it.
I have to buy 2 batteries on Saturday. My truck still has the factory batteries. Was under the hood today doing some mods and noticed the passenger one has more acid accumulation ontop than I'm comfortable with.
So between age and acid and FICM paranoa, I'm getting new ones. I plan on doing the VGT Turbo relearn when I swap them. Since my truck is bone stock, I think I'll have a pretty good baseline to see if I see any performance increase
