New rotor offering from Raybestos
#3
All these slotted and drilled rotors seem a bit gimmicy to me. The brake pads have a slot, that should let the 'gas' out. If the metal is missing, there is no friction, right? Isn't friction the whole point? Seems to me a quality rotor and pad should do the job (or has for the past 109 yrs).

Don't get slotted/drilled rotors unless you just like the way they look. It was thought for a while that they helped vent the gasses that the pad created, which theoretically can actually push the pad away from the disc. So people started drilling them. Some racing teams found that drilled rotors were actually fatigue cracking and discs were failing after heat cycles. This might be ok for race teams that change rotors often but its less than ideal for street cars, although on the other hand they don't endure the same kinda heat that race cars do, generally. So then everyone started running the slotted rotors, which are still in vogue in some forms of road racing. But a lot of race teams have switched to carbon or ceramic compounds that don't create the gasses. In fact, I've heard most modern brake pads don't create enough gas for the that to even be an issue. As for cooling, from what i've seen as far as actual temperature data, switching to slotted/drilled rotors has very negligible effects. Creating a simple plastic scoop on the lower control arm of race cars that directs air over the caliper offers greater cooling for less. Drilling or slotting both reduce rotating mass, which is good for accelerating/braking faster and for reducing spring rates. However, one of the rotor's jobs is to absorb heat, and the more mass a heat sink has the more effective it is at absorbing heat. You increase surface area by driling/slotting, but reduce mass. So its a trade off. It also reduces strength, as mentioned before.
Having said that, my excursion has warped rotors and I'm aware of their reputation for warping rotors. If someone tries some more expensive rotors and finds them to be more resistant to warping, I'd spend the extra coin for that attribute alone. My understanding is the oem rotors are of a very poor quality steel and that is the reason for the warping. I've had good luck with raybestos racing stuff on some of my older autocross cars.

Interesting. But I typically avoid any brake product from Pecker Boys. Have had nothing but bad luck with em. Wonder where they're made...? If its from China, that almost guarantees warpage. Currently running the Napa Ultra Premiums and Hawk pads as the rotors have a lifetime warranty. Swapped em out under warranty once. I wanted the cryo-treated rotors, but they were ~$400 a pop!

I know that. If he wasn't a sponsor I'd have reported his post. But I don't think that being a sponsor makes it polite to just thrash into a thread and post completely unrelated things, even worse that it was a double post. If he had at least read the post and said "Hey if anyone wants to try these new rotors this is what I have that fits the excursion and this is the price, and we can help you with other stuff too" then that woulda been cool with me. But I'm going to purposely not buy things from his site because of the way he markets his product. Just because you pay to spam people doesn't mean that the people have to like it.

Following, not leading...
Stewart, since I jumped on that bandwagon too, if he is a "supporting vendor" why does he not have the "SUPPORTER" icon next to his name like yourself? All I see is under the name is "SPONSER", which I may be mistaken, but you can change that *****-nilly, because I see one that says "Never fry bacon NAKED!", oh, that is you, as well as other various ones. I am asking this because I am a newbie, and so I/we how to spot spammers rather than a Supporters in the future.

Stupid is...
Yeah, the "SPONSOR" under his name means he's a Supporting Vendor, but it's also his user name being the color green. Regular users are in blue, like ours and moderators are in red.
Yeah, just like with my posts, all I'm trying to do is help out other FTE members!
Spammers are very short lived at FTE. They are quickly sniffed out, drawn, and quartered!
