temp

2001 F350...V-10.
Seems like the temp gauge would register higher....only goes about 1/4 of the way on the gauge. It does it either empty or pulling my 5th wheel. And it really seems like I never hear the fan come on. Is it a sensor/switch or???

Who knows? Don't have enough information.

Before concluding the temperature gauge is showing something out of order, you need to know what the actual operating temps are.

Two ways - I suggest you do both:

1) Scan tool to read the ECT PID to see what the PCM thinks the temperature is.

2) IR thermometer to measure the coolant temp at the thermostat housing.

FWIW, my engine has a fan with a hydraulic clutch. It runs as some speed all the time.

I've only heard mine come on one time. I was pulling our 5th wheel in 100+ temperature in southern Idaho. When I pulled off the freeway heading to state park we got stuck in a small town railroad crossing with a train that just seem to go on forever. While we were sitting idling at the crossing I heard the fan kick on and so far that been the only time I actually heard it come on.

Ok...did the scan for the ERT....hit a high of 194 degrees and then settled on about 188 while idling after thermostat opened. Still have only heard the fan one time and have never seen the temp gauge move.....it starts out at the bottom of the dial and hit approx.1/4 of the way up and never moves after that. Guess I will live with it....thanks all for the help.
