I have searched and can't find the answer to my problem. I want to hard wire my Escort through the overhead console. Finally got a blend mount for the SG II and the RD. I tried my test light and finding a ground is a challenge. I need the color of the wire that is a switch(on/off with the ignition) wire.?????. If not that can you lead me to a grounding spot reasonably close to the console. Thanks in advance.
As far as the switched hot wire, look for an empty slot in the fuse box that is switched to the ignition and fish the wire behind the dash, up the pillar, and underneath the headboard on the roof to the console.
I hardwired my V1 up above the mirror and fed it with an Add a Circuit. There are fuses in the CJB that are switched by the Acc. Delay Relay. There are factory grounding points behind the big cover under the column(look above the "CPU-01" box in the pic). Running a pair of wires from the headliner to under dash is a cinch. Good RD's are expensive and worth doing it right. This is the best option IMO.
You should be able to pull both switched power and ground from the message center on the console even if you don't have the message center. The connector you're looking for is at the front, it is big and gray. See the second pic.
Ground will be pin 1 pink/orange and 12v will be pin 7 light blue/pink. The pin numbers are from the message center female side of the plug and if I remember correctly, the number are opposite on the other connector but the wire colors are correct. Just use the trouble light to confirm.
You can disconnect the message center and everything will still work. That will give you easy access to the pins for testing.
Pinout from message center:
