Question Wrong Fluid in Trans...

I recently had a new clutch installed in my '90 RangerSTX with manual 5-spd overdrive transmission. I just found out that the mechanic put the wrong fluid in the transmission and possibly the wrong amount.
So my question is: How much harm can result from this kind of mixup?

It depends, did he put in gear oil instead of the ATF? I made that mistake when I put a clutch in my 95 F-150 with the 5spd. I put in gear oil, but never had any problems with it, I put another 40k on that truck before I traded it in, and the new owner has had no problems in the last 3 years he has had it. Gear oil isn't viscous enough to get into and lubricate the bearings in the newer trannies. I would change the fluid with the correct type ASAP just to be safe. The 5spd in my mothers 95 F-150 just lost all gears at 150k and it has had the proper ATF in it the whole time.

exactly, he put in the gear-oil instead of ATF. What worries me is the fluid level being low. I estimate that I've driven around 500 miles on it...Should I worry?

Manual trannies usually whine quite a bit if they are dangerously low. If you didn't hear any noise while you drove it, you may be okay. How did you find out it was wrong?

Honestly, I wouldn't worry a lot about it. Just drain it and refill with ATF. There are people here who have run gear oil in that tranny for tens of thousands of miles and not had any problems. I wouldn't do it, but apparently it works.

More info on vehicle situation...

Well, a few days after I got the clutch replaced, I got stuck at a red light unable to shift into gear. It was the slave cylinder and clutch line. I had a different place do that work, and they brought my attention to the tranny fluid. BTW, it's a 2.9l v6 4x4.
I changed the trans fluid today following Nightrain's steps: www.ford-trucks.com/forums/showthread.php?t=223815
hopefully everythings cool now .
