with syn, you can go the 7,500mile interval. if you want to go longer I suggest that you test the oil.

Ford recommends 7500 in the book....don't forget thay recommend 15-40 .... (regular duty). My oil analysis told me I was good to go to that 7500 miles with my Shell 5-40 after their tests. I do tow the RV in my sig. with it.

Like I mentioned, I did 20K oil change, 5K mile oil filter changes for 160K. During that time (20,000 miles), I consumed maybe a 1/2 quart and oil still looked really clean. I am driving 3-4K a month now, so I reduced my intervals to 10K oil change and 5K mile oil filter change. Rotella T 5W-40 synthetic is great stuff!! : )

Changing the filter at 5,000 miles does nothing for the fact that the 6.0 shears oil. That could have been the reason for the failed injectors. Just speculating.

^After talking to one of the mechanic's in the Ford garage (telling him what I was doing), he scolded me good! I just felt bad for all the miles and oil I would be going through (sounds really immature, huh?). So, are you saying that I am adding zero benefit of even changing the oil filter at 5K? Well, it sounds like a good idea, but I am no expert. : )

The 6.0 shears oil, proven fact, filters take out crap. Shearing lowers the viscosity rating. Oil fires the injectors. Sheared oil is hard on injectors. If you read all the oil threads available, years of reading probably, it is a common consensus that the 6.0 needs 5,000 mile oil and filter changes. Some have pushed the envelope and been successful. Many have not. Do you feel lucky? If you'r not, it's very expensive.

How is sheared oil hard on the injectors?

If you had gotten a oil analysis done on a 20,000 run you would have found out how low the original viscosity was sheared down to. I would guess the 40 weight was worned down to 20 or lower. My engine will shear 5w-40 down to 30 in about 6,000 miles.

I'll send the oil in at the next oil change, I'll go 10K with the Rotella T, 5K with filter and let you guys know.

Seems like if oil shear is the dominating issue, and changing the filter has no effect on oil shear, it doesn't seem like you are getting any real benefit from it. I'm not saying that more frequent oil filter changes won't help in other areas, but it doesn't help the what seems to be the dominant issue which is oil shear. Just my opinion.

^Never has felt like a good idea to run the oil this long, but with the miles I pile up, it some how makes me feel better.......it's sick isn't it? Hey, I know oil is cheap compared to a new motor, but with a fill capacity of nearly 4 gallons.....I just had to roll the dice....plus I squeek when I walk! : ) Sorry if the confession of going 20K really weirded you guys out, but money is money in this economy, I have been rolling the dice with this truck. It's the guinea pig of the fleet........and my most favorite truck out of the lot! : )
