All you need is CI4 plus api rating or higher and decide if you want dino or syn. Other than that this thread will be a 100 miles long with favorites and you'll know less than you do now.

To add what 69cj has said I would recommend a Diesl Oil with a API CJ4 rating since this will be the most available and has produced some stellar UOA's.

To add a little more to your question I did an oil consumption test in which I ran three different oils in this order: 1. Rotella 15w40 2. Delo 15w40 3. Delvac 15w40 to 6,500 miles each. The Rotella consumed ~.75 quart, the Delo consumed ~ 2 quarts, and the Delvac consumed ~ 0 quarts.

Also at 6,500 miles both the Rotella and Delo made the engine hard to start with the assumption that the oil sheared to a very low viscosity being the root cause. The Delvac litterly had no discernable difference with starting capability so I would say the Delvac's viscosity held up better.

Also I'm realy impressed with the Trimer technology (a form of Moly) that's used in the Delvac and possibly to a lesser degree Rotella.

Bottom line if you change your oil every 5k miles with CJ4 rated oil and a Motorcraft oil filter, you've taken a major step in promoting a long engine life.

WOW That's some good info, currently I'm having Mobile 1 Elite 15/40 Synthetic blend put in but I think I'm having stiction problems and think it might be the oil, because it's a blend and not full Syn. What do you guys think?

The most ideal has been 5w-40 but there has been lots of movement towards 10w-30.
Many also use 15w-40 in the warmer parts of the year, and switch to 5w-40 or 10w-30 in the colder temps.

Yes a full synthetic (5w40 or 10w30 semi syn) will help with stiction. I don't know where you're located, but you may want to confirm your truck has the latest Inductive Heating flash at a Ford dealership if you don't know. This is a fairly inexpensive fix/improvement to stiction problems, but it does have its limitations pending how cold it gets in your area.

Your oil's viscosity has a lot more to do with stiction than the type. Lower is better in terms of stiction. As to what type or brand, just follow what the other guys posted above and you'll be good to go. Also, make sure you get the inductive heat flash and check your FICM voltages too.

I have ran Rotella T 5W-40 for 240K. Good stuff, I do oil changes every 10K (I use to do 20K intervals, did that for 160K......don't flame me!) and filter every 5K. Very happy with it, seems to start faster. I actually run Rotella T 5W-40 in all my rigs ('02 Ford Excurusion, 7.3L PSD, and my '95 BMW 740IL).

Is there any recomendations for cold temps. Average 20deg winters? Do I go 10-40w or even 5-40w. I have been using motorcraft oils, im assuming there rated good?

I second the question, I am goin on my first oil change since I bought my truck about 2 months ago, I am leaning towards the Rotella 5w-40 syn. I am experiencing some stiction on the cold starts. I do not have a clue what kind of oil the used car dealer used when I bought it, probably something very cheap. I also have a couple bottles of rev-x to try after I give the syn oil change sometime time to settle in. How often should the oil/oil filter be changed with the syn?

Average 20f winter temps you can try a 10w-30, it doesn't have to be synthetic, but it has to be at least CI-4 or better. Unless you are looking very hard all you are going to find is CJ-4, which is just fine.

I recommend change the oil with the 5w-40 and see how that goes, give it time. Then if the stiction issues persist... then add a bottle of rev-x.
