New project is here for winter. 64 shortbed F100 from my cousin tore all apart.
I want to put it together for my pops for him to tool around in, and knowing him, pull some stumps out with. I have a 289 block in the garage squirreled away for a future project, but an 84 f150 came in last week that had a really nice running 4.9l in it. The 84 also has a 4-speed in it, but 2nd gear wont engage downshifting, so I still need a trans.
I am thinking the inline as I can pull it complete here and drop in complete at home and bada bing. The 5.0 I would have to build, so more $.

Thanx guys, any help appreciated.
I'd go with the 4.9. Keep it simple and cheap (I'm assuming cost is a concern...as you brought it up).
Cost is always a concern. I actually have been wanting to do this for a couple years now, and this looks like the winter the stars (and my wallet) line up.
The 4.9l will definitely be cheaper, and I drove the dog p*** out of the truck Saturday to see how it ran, and other than the usual oil pan, valve and inspection cover gasket leaks, very clean motor.
Will I run into any hiccups with the oil pan and the 2wd crossmember?
Besides, the less I spend on driveline, the more I have to spend on a purty flat black paint job that my mom hates and dad loves!
The 4.9 will require the fabrication of side engine perches to mount the engine. The small block has readily available aftermarket mounts. You can possibly find a front mount and a small block 4.9 bell hosing for a 65/66F350 and go that route.
You will also need to add a transmission as the 64 trans will not fit anything later.
I like the 4.9L for budget and nostalgia reasons, same reasons I'm doing one. I plan on putting a 4.9L EFI, and an NP435 in a '64 4WD this winter, I've had stuff sitting around for a few years, and as you said, things are starting to line up for this winter.
