I have a 1953 "anniversary" F-1 pickup with what appears to be a 272-292-312 OHV engine. It appears to be original. Is this possible...maybe built near the end of the run to explain no flathead?
Since '54-on used the Y-block, it would be easy to use a '54-on engine, bellhousing, mounts, radiator, etc if a flathead died. It would literally fit like it was made for it, if done right.
When Ford introduced OHV V8 engines in 1954 Ford/Merc's, they had the same cubic inches as Flatheads.
1948/53 Trucks, 1949/53 Ford Passenger Cars: Ford flathead V8: 239 cid / 1954 Ford OHV Y block 239 cid / 1949/53 Merc flathead: 256 cid / 1954 Merc OHV Y block: 256 cid.
1903-1953 Golden Anniversary: The horn buttons used on 1953 Ford Trucks, the horn button/horn rings used on 1953 Ford Passenger Cars are so marked.
It's real EZ to swap horn buttons, so the truck may be a 1954/56 w/a 1953 horn button. AFAIK, there is no other part marked 1903-1953 Golden Anniversary on 1953 Ford trucks.
Did anybody ever wonder why the '53 trucks were the ONLY Ford vehicle with the Flathead V8 mounted the way it was-single yoke type mount in the front; two side mounts at the bell housing. All very similar to the the Y-Block mounts of '54. I've always felt that the new truck design for '53 was meant to have the new engine but material allocations in effect for the Korean war delayed Ford's plan. Last minute changes resulted in the odd engine mounting system.
From what I've read, Ford's intent was to have the Y-block OHV engine done in time for the 50th anniversary in '53. It wasn't ready and they had to go with plan B at the last minute. That's why there's so many strange, one-off parts.
