Yea, I know a dude who sold his cousin his '66 SS396 with the understanding that he would buy it back when the cousin tired of it. Cousin sells it in Canada--no chance of EVER getting it back. A-hole to the 4th power imo....

From: Long Beach, Ms.
Brother-in-law blew up his GM work car.
Needed a replacement and I have 2 Taurus.
Wife offers brother the '07.
She wants me to make him a deal.
I don't want to sell.
Car is paid off.
Heck all vehicles are paid off.
Daughter is 15 with learners permit.
She needs the car.
He needs the car to make a living.
NADA $9,500
Tell brother $8,000
Thank goodness he buys new.
We gave the '96 Taurus to the Sis-in-law when it was 5 years old.
The Father-in-law drives my '08 F-150.

...family members NO WAY!
I started doing that last year. Fun hobby, now I just need to get my current batch sold. I usually rescue mine from scrap, I make frequent scrap runs and if I see one in line I buy it. I also picked up an old Ford LGT120 for extremely cheap that way.
I don't think I would ever sell a vehicle to a family member. I have bought/sold vehicles amongst friends, but it was usually some oddball older vehicle and problems were stated up front. I was on the receiving end of a semi-bad deal years back, but in the end it was all sorted out and didn't really affect our friendship. I knew the truck had problems going in, it just turned out to not be the problem we thought it was and it needed other stuff fixed.
IMO, making a quick buck off you is grounds to end any neighbor benefits, like tool lending, lawn help, vehicle help, etc.

Yup. Same here.

That was a dick move on your neighbors part.

I sold a Mustang several years ago to someone that I guess you could classify as a co-worker (same employer...different shop). I didn't want to sell the car...he'd spent the entire deployment (military) pestering me about it and I was about to move off base...so I kind of needed the money anyways, so I agreed to sell it to him. I ran into him about a week later and he was having trouble getting it to start. He proceeded to run his mouth about it and I agreed to take a quick peek at it.

The battery cables were corroded at the point they contacted the battery...AS I TOLD HIM IT WOULD BE PRIOR TO SELLING HIM THE CAR! I'd cleaned the corrosion a couple times before and each time it ran fine...I'd just never gotten around to replacing the cables (again...as I told him). I'm sure that a$$ho1e had been running around shooting his mouth off to his friends about how I sold him a lemon.

The look on his face when I pointed out the issue (within 30 seconds of popping the hood) was priceless. The douche bag had spent hundreds on ignition components (i.e. MSD distributor, coil, wires, plugs, etc.) and never even bothered to check the one thing I told him was a recurring issue.

Edit: The second part of that story that I forgot...about a year later, he decided to sell it. He offered it to me first (I was somewhat interested), but he wanted $3k more than I sold it to him for because he put a bunch of money into it. lol.

I recently sold my old dd to a close friend. He knew it had problems before I decided to sell it. (Rusty frame, oil leaks and a couple other small things) he had no problem with any of that because I sold it to him for just over scrap price. Upon trying to start it to sell it ( I hadn't driven it for 4 months) I learned the starter was shot, so I told him about it and he didn't care. He bought a used one for $25 and called it good.

If it craps out he can scrap it and not be out much
