Can't shift out of park -'07 F150

For the last couple of months, I am not able to push the button on the gear selector to change out of park. Twice I have had to give up and drive the wife's car. When I come back it works once and then it starts again. Any help would be greatly appreciated.

ok, I just had this happen. There are two possibilities. One is the brake switch. From what I understand of this if it is the switch when your truck wont come out of park your brake lights will not light up(basically your truck doesn't know the brakes are on). So have someone check that. If that is it, then you have to replace the brake switch. My brake switch was fine. What it was for me was the shift-lock solenoid. Here's what i did, remove your center shift console cover. You have to open the center storage console then you will see where to pry it off. Once it is off you will see on the left side of your shifter there will be a white tab. That tab has to move down to unlock the shifter. Play with it a little and you will see what I am talking about. What I did was take a little tiny piece of scrap wood, pushed the white tab down so the shifter was unlocked, then I jammed that piece of wood in there so the white tab was always down. Works perfect now. So basically the solenoid is not even part of the equation. You can shift it without even depressing the brake. I am used to depressing it anyway, so I always do and you still have to depress the button on the shifter so it is still totally safe. I think to get it fixed right the dealer will change the whole solenoid and it is big money from what I understand. This will save you some big money. Here's a link to my thread about it. Good luck

My brake lights work fine, so I will try your work-around and get pricing on a solenoid. Thanks for the help.

I guess I forgot to ask you if you had the center shifter. I gave you instructions for the center shift. I really don't know where the solenoid is for a shifter on the tree.

Worked like a champ, thanks for the help. There are a couple of Solenoids $43 and $53, need to figure out which one is the issue and will probably replace it. I do have the center console shifter.

Good to hear it!! What did you jam in there? Like I said I used a little scrap of wood, but that was just what I found in the garage quick, I know there are other things you can put in there. I never looked into replacing the solenoid, it's not a big deal to to me. For years and years you didn't have to brake to shift out of park, then like 15 years ago they started doing that.

Same thing, I cut the end off a paint stiring stick and put a piece of tape across it to hold it from vibrating out. I have a 1969 Mustang automatic that has the button but no brake release junk on it. My 16yr old daughter sometimes drives my truck (when Mom's is Edge is unavailable) so I want to do it for her sake.

Well, glad I could help. And welcome to the site. There is a lot of good info on here and it is fun to poke around and read the threads. And sometimes you come across stuff that really helps.

I've followed this thread because as of yesterday my 07 150 won't shift out of park. It's not the brakes and the solenoid seems to be working because it releases when I press the brake. But it feels like the button on the shaft doesn't register that I'm pressing the brake down. Suggestions?
