My 289 finally running. (short video teaser)
Knowing how we are all anxious for pictures and videos, here's my submission for the evening crew
My 289 is finally running. They weren't able to dyno tune it because it's a 64 Fairlane motor (5 bolt block) and the bell housing they have is a 65 1/2 or later (6 bolt block). I found a 1963 260/289 bell-housing on the HAMB but it was too small for the clutch assembly from the dyno to fit inside.
They did run it on the dyno as a test bed and were able to set the timing, do the cam run in and check the exhaust gas temps. All cylinders are within a 50° F. range of each other. The sound is not too bad in the video but the engine sounds great IRL. I can’t wait to get it into the truck and see what it’ll do!!
So, sorry, no dyno numbers but, Edelbrock claims the heads, cam and manifold together with a 4 bbl. Carb will make 324 hp and 347 ft lbs on a 302 block and the only difference between the 302 and my 289 is 0.15” stroke so… it should be close to those numbers.
The gentleman operating the dyno and my engine in the video is the owner of Boyd's Racing Engines in Norman, OK, Mr. Louis Boyd.

Thank you all. I am stoked!!
I think I get to pick up the motor Tuesday. It was too warm to remove from the dyno Friday afternoon so they will take it off Monday.
The cam is a little hotter than stock. It does have a nice idle surge. I didn't have replace the pistons or rods and the block just needed a clean up honing. This motor had forged pistons in it. They magna-fluxed the block and crank then polished the crank and balanced all the reciprocating assembly. It's a far cry from the 460 I had that I thought about putting in the truck but, it's also about half as heavy and should get decent mileage.
The trans is a warmed over C-4 with a custom built torque converter. The trans guy asked me for the specs to my cam and at that point I knew I had the right guy to rebuild my trans. He builds a lot of them for local racers and he and his kids have several cars. It's been tweaked and tuned here and there too. He says it won't snap the back glass out of the cab but it should shift assertively.
As far as the spotlight goes, I'll be in it soon enough, with a running truck!!
