True..there's the issue of the tires' rolling resistance and the amount of HP the engine needs to get the tire moving and then rotating. Harder compounds and tight tread patterns generate less rolling resistance than big ol meats with knobby treads, they're not only loud, but also need more HP (and fuel) to maintain at-speed.
Looks like a quandry of compromises.
