Big back window 50 f1

I was looking on flea bay and saw an unrestored 1950 f1 with a big back window, not a 51-52 with 48-50 front sheet metal . It was floor shift with express bed. I had read somewhere that there were some late fifty trucks had the big back window but I thought the late trucks had column shift and the flat sided beds. Just curious about the rarity

Can you post a link to the auction? '50's didn't come with the 51-2 wider window, late or not. If it was a 3/4 ton, it likely had the 4 speed trans, which was always floor shift. The light duty 3 speed was the only one that got the shifter moved to the column, sometime during the '50 model year. All of the 'express' long bed trucks form 48-52 have the raised panel sides. But those were not F-1's.

I'm assuming he's talking about this one. And man, based on my first glance, this is gonna get some talk. BUT, the vin number listed should be a 49 I'm guessing (mtflat can confirm that). We need a pic of the inside of that rear window so that we can see the crossbracing. The 48-50's have 2 crossbraces (one above and one below). The 51-52's did not. But like I said, this one is gonna raise some eyebrows. Woohooo!! We've got something to figure out.

The link posted by Doc is the truck I saw . Looks like a short bed half ton to me . I believe it was here where I read about some late 50 trucks being built with 51 cab backs near the end of the model year.

The big back glass in a 48-50 has been thrown around here before, but a lot of us have written it off as a probable legend (until now maybe). And you're right about it being mentioned with the late 50 trucks. But, like I mentioned above, that is a low VIN number in the listing and most likely a 49 or a very early 50 (not the expected late 50). Trust me, this is gonna get some interest. The other thing that tells me it's not a true late 50 truck is the floor shifter. Trust me, this is gonna stir some interest. It's either the real thing, a victim of somebody widening the back glass after the factory, or it had a dash transplant.

I've got no answers. That's a late 49 or very early 50 based on the numbers, if I remember correctly from Tim's previous posts. And that's also not an express bed. That's the typical 48-early 50 style F-1 short bed. All in all, it looks like a pretty nice truck, and a good place to start a project. But the window thing sure is curious.

I'm with Doc and Wayne - it's a standard 49 F1 in all details except the rear window. And no, there is no evidence of any 50's receiving a large back window.

After studying the pics I'd bet the paint/body smudges around the window are evidence that a 51/52 window frame was welded in.

After driving a 48 for more than 10 years I've been temped to do that very thing - I just can't see out the original "porthole" very well.

Here's what I know. Researching the 44-52 body parts catalog (my version is an original dated January, 1952) it shows the rear cab panel being replaced by the 51-2 part with the larger window. By 1952, you couldn't have even bought the small window panel if your truck was damaged and needed that part replaced. If your 48-50 got in a wreck, the big window rear panel is what you would have got if you ordered a new one. There's enough paint spots of different colors on it, it wouldn't surprise me that if we had a closer look, you'd see that rear panel was replaced 50 years ago and some spot painting done when it was repaired from some kind of collision or other damage.

Hey Tim, I've got just the thing. A really nice 52 rear cab panel for you to take with you when you visit. I'll even toss in a good back glass.

Good point. I sent the seller a question and asked if he would be kind enough to show us a pic of the inside of that window. The crossbracing will be a big clue.

It's hard to believe anyone would go to the trouble of replacing that panel back in the day. Hard to conceive of something damaging the rear panel and not destroying the roof at the same time, so you'd be looking at replacing a whole lot of metal. Much easier to replace the entire cab with one from the boneyard, and weld in the old dash.

The interior pic will tell the tale! We taking bets?!

Also has a 51/52 Magic Air heater installed.

I bet the back panel was replaced.

Hmmm? If it could only talk. Do I remember right that the steel bed floor was also discontinued in '49, which would fit with the serial number comments? I bought a really straight F-3 a few years ago from this same seller. He's a small time dealer in that area. Stu
