IF it is synchro in first, it is the Ford "303" top loading, side-shifting 3 speed.
Ratios might be 2.99/1.75/1
These were put in almost every car and light truck Ford made during their production, which was from about 1962 clear into the mid 1980s.
There are definitely at least two ratio sets, one for small 6s and one for V8s. There could be several other ratios as well.

If it isn't a "303", it would be a BW T85 or similar. Those were offered with OD starting in the 1950s until the 1970s or later.
Those are side loaded, side shifting, so you can see the difference pretty easy if you can't confirm a synchro or non-synchro first.

Yes, they are tough. Expect high mile units to need bearings. Synchros are pretty tough if treated right. Ford put them behind 4bbl 390s in Galaxies and advertised them as a "3 1/2 speed" because of the then-unusual synchro first gear. This was a big deal as insurance companies did not like 4 speeds, so cheapskates could get their big motor and be able to shift gears, but avoid the 4 speed insurance penalty.
