My '85 F350 Thread

Going to do this like my thread for my '94 F150. As I do stuff worth posting (and getting pictures of) I will.

Thanks to Bill (numberdummy) for breaking down the vin for me.

1FD = FoMoCo USA incomplete vehicle.
J = GVWR range: 9,001-10,000 lbs.
F37 = F350 2WD Cab & Chassis.
1 = 6.9L Diesel.
7 = Check Digit, FoMoCo use only.
F = 1985.
K = Kansas City MO Assembly Plant.
A50xxx = 1985 Numerical Sequence of Assembly, the trucks specific serial number.
161" Wheelbase.
F378 = F350 2WD Cab & Chassis, 10,000 lbs. Gross Vehicle Weight Rating.
DH8: DH = Tan Knit & Vinyl / 8 = Regular Cab - Cab & Chassis.
P = Warner T-19 4 Speed Manual Transmission.
43 = Dana 70 Rear Axle / 3.54-1 / non Limited Slip / 7,400 lb. Rear Axle Capacity.
KP5 = Spring codes. Bill doesnt know.
23 = Memphis TN Ford District Sales Office, where the original selling dealer ordered the truck from.
9A = Wimbledon White (was color code M from 1964 thru 1979)

Im going to track the mileage through Fuelly like I am doing with my '94 & wife's car.

This is how I brought her home last week.

The bed has 2 stage cylinders & lifts enough I dont want to try & climb up it. The PTO & Hyd. shifters were jerry rigged & are stupid short throw. Plus the PTO shaft isnt welded up straight & part of it hits the hyd. linkage.

This past weekend I swapped the bumper & grill insert with my '82 F250. Also removed the condenser & some of the A/C lines. Then put a piece of window screen over the radiator.

Had to grind off the two lower bumper bolts.

Parts from the '82 off

Tuesday morning after work I took the bedsides off.

This is what was holding the sides together.

Tuesday after I took the bedsides off I drained the fuel tank & put in a couple gallons I had. The old fuel looked like coffee & smelt like cheap whiskey. Last week I put a quart of transmission fluid in the tank so it wouldnt be AS bad for the pump until I could get around to draining it.

There are some little issues I need to get fixed but for the most part, its drivable right now.

It doesn't look bad without the sides. I would chop off all that metal that is sticking up higher than the cab though.

I plan to redo the whole headache rack & put expanded metal in there. Im thinking about following the cab lines when I do it. Then when I build some sides for it, make it so it fills the gap between rack & front bed corners.

Changed the oil last week. Used a Powerstroke filter. New fuel filters. Also got some additive for the fuel.

Took it for a shake down run to work last week & lost the fuel tank cap. Got a new one that actually fits tight.

It has a slight problem restarting when its warm, not running temps. Im sure it has some air leaks in the fuel system but I will get to them later. Also thinking about putting in a manual glow plug button cause when it cools off enough for them to kick in, it fires off without problems.

This is just my opinion, but I think the truck would look cool with a tow truck bed on that has had the boom cut off. I've never been a big fan of flatbeds, but I do like the way the tow truck beds look.
