fuel pump issues

So the other day I got on it pretty good and had some nice wheel hop. My fuel psi used to stay at a constant 70-72 psi cruising or full throttle now after the wheel hoping it runs at 63-68 psi cruising at 70 MPH and at full throttle it drops very fast to 10 psi. So my question is, is the fuel pump going bad or?

F250 7.3 Powerstroke

Hi Ford Lovers,
I'm having problems with my F250. The pickup wouldn't start so we put glow plugs in. Then I hauled 11 round bales 136 miles got half way home. Here comes the problem we lost power. It sounded like we blown a tire. The turbo acted like it tried to work. But I had turbo replaced. Went to haul more hay again got 1/2 way home and lost power till we got to a corner and pickup died and now won't start. Coming home it kept jerking and cough like a diesel problem.
We would go up a hill and get almost to the top of the hill the turbo sounded like it was trying to work but no power. Now it tries to start but the machine to test with says battery is low. And check engine lite is on . It has a new filter and it did have water in diesel so we put lucas type stuff in tank. I need to know if I need to replace Cam Sensor or Fuel Pump or change both?
Need help from all you Ford lovers.
Carol

Hello Carol and Welcome to FTE. First of all how many miles on it ? It does sound like a fuel issue to me. I would drain the fuel again and see if you get more water and pull lid and check filter. And maybe change the filter again if needed. Do hear the fuel pump running when it dies? Check voltage at fuel pump to start. It could be clogged filter screens in the tank. If so do the hutch mod to tank. If you can give more background on the truck I am some of the guys here can come up with somewhere to start. Just my 2cents. But like Snakedoc said "First it would be better if you started a new thread about the problems"

With doing the H/H mod, is there a pre-filter setup? If not, then i'd say ur pump is goin south, with all the junk accumulating into it.

Fuel Pump

Its a 2000 model F250 7.3 Powerstroke.
It has the round filter on top and Fuel filter under the rail.

If you take the round filter top off we checked to see if it was getting fuel and it is. It had a lot of water in bowl though. So we put that Lucas stuff in.

It is also running batteries down what ever is wrong with it. We can jump start and it stays started for a short while and at a stop sign it dies and thats all she wrote.

It has 2 new batteries on it and new glow plugs, new turbo and Fuel Filter .
It only started jerking when hauling Hay long distances.

I pray I didn't blow the new turbo.

Whe didn't see black or white smoke when it lost power going up a hill it was just coughing and jerking like bad gas.
We need help getting it on the road again.

Carol,

Check all the boots that lead off of the turbo and make sure they are tight and connected. The blown tire sound and loss of power could could have very well been a boot coming off or blowing out. Make sure there are no holes in them as well. Check at the turbo and at the intercooler next to each battery. You can follow the pipe from the turbo to the intercooler.

7.3bo-ti-er, is there a screen on the suction side of the pump and if so, is it clogged? Other wise i would guess bad pump.

Bad alternator. These aren't like like old mechanical diesels, the Powerstroke needs 12v power to run.

You really need to start your own thread.

Sounds like either a restriction at the pump or a bad pump. What kind of filter do you have between the pump and the tank? The other possibility is electrical. Either a loose or corroded connection and you slapping the pump made the connection good again.

Welcome to FTE Carol. Sounds like you really need to pay attention to your maintenance. Changing the fluids and filters is vital in making these trucks last. How many miles since your last oil change?

That fuel filter on the rail is your fuel pump unless you or someone has installed an aftermarket fuel filter between the fuel tank and the pump under the driver seat. That round filter on top of the motor should be changed around every 15,000 miles.

Pouring that lucas stuff in won't help you with the water. There's a yellow lever behind the bowl the round filter sits in on top of the motor. Rotate that yellow lever clockwise 1/4 turn and let all the water drain out of the bowl. Then close the lever and cycle the key on for 20 seconds without starting 2 or 3 times to pump fuel back into the bowl. Let's rule out the simple stuff that can get very expensive if they're ignored first.
