Additional Trans. Cooler

Which one of these would you pick and why?

Flex-a-lite 3820 - Flex-a-lite TransLife Transmission Coolers - Overview - SummitRacing.com

Flex-a-lite 4126 - Flex-a-lite TransLife Transmission Coolers - Overview - SummitRacing.com

I also like this one, 8" fan, 1100cfm. I have the 6.0L IC from Mishimoto from Clay and its a nice unit.

Mishimoto Heavy Duty Transmission Cooler W/ Electric Fan, by Mishimoto

Keep in mind that I had to turn on my A/C last weekend to get the needle up to 125*, otherwise it rests at the bottom. I also never pull anything more than 7000 lbs. One of the Flex-lite's is all alum. and the other is copper/alum, which probably doesn't cool quite as well. The Mishi is all alum.

If the high temp you see is 125*, I wouldn't waist money or add any more cooling. Sounds like what you have is already working quite well.
I also dont care for tube and fin coolers (all 3 are), a stacked plate design is more efficient.

I do like the fan idea...just sayin

Well I've only had my trans. gauge for a week. Previously I had my Edge Attitude monitor for gauges, but didn't include trans temp (part of the reason for a switch). I have no idea how hot it gets when I'm pulling. My Mishi IC is plate/fin design, I also like the fan idea

My trans seems to take a good two hrs of towing on the highway before it reaches its max temp. Obviously less time at lower speeds etc...
Mine ran at 205 from Texas to Florida last week pulling the 5'r, Thats just with a tru-cool.
I really need to get the 6.0 cooler installed soon.

I guess I'm trying to decide, am I really 3x better off with a 6.0L TC ($306) vs. Mishi auxiliary cooler ($131)?

I would say so, but it all depends on how much you tow.
The Mishi in the link is Height - 7.5" Length - 12.8"
My 6.0 cooler is twice as tall (14"), and almost twice as wide (22") I dont think that little fan can make up the difference.

You could try Car-Part.com--Used Auto Parts Market for a used 6.0 cooler. I got one for $100.

How did you find one??? I went there and looked but "Transmission Oil Cooler" was not one of the parts listed. Did you get to see pics of it before you bought it? Was it in decent shape when you got it?

Im a huge fan of extra cooling for the tranny and I say put it in if you can no matter what your temps currently are, fact is, if your using stock cooling power, its not sufficient, thats already proven

As far as which cooler, I have seen the 6.0 cooler in action and it works well, BUT personally I would take one with a fan any day over it, here is the reason. Your tranny goes through its worse moments when your going very slow and especially in reverse (getting that trailer in its spot) think about reverse up hill! HOT HOT HOT
this is where your tranny gets ate up and if you have a controlled fan you can turn that on 10 minutes before you know your going to be going slow or reversing and it should be golden...
thats what I would do if I had it to do over again
In fact, if I had one with a fan, I would run that fan ragged, I would turn it on 20+ min before I knew I was going to be going slow and leave it on the whole time, screw it, fan replacement can't be much $ and we all know tranny's are!
-my 2cents

(http://www.riffraffdiesel.com/mm5/me...e=F731-TOW-DER this one suggestied by snakedoc is the best I've seen posted here thus far IMO but thing is it doesn't need to be for the 7.3, it can be for anything, I would look for an even bigger one, maybe dual fans, but hey I'm extreme sometimes haha

another suggestion, use dr tranny kleen to clean your stock cooler out and keep it inline with your new cooler (don't remove the old, add to it)

It is listed under "auto trans cooler." Depends on the yard, some will email you pics others not.

Mine was in pretty good shape, it only had 45k on it before the prior truck had a cab fire.

Thanks. I can't believe I couldn't find that. The only one that comes up is a '04 F550 SD for $75

The Title of the thread says, "Additional Trans. Cooler". Were you thinking of running your new Trans Cooler in line with your current 7.3 cooler? I was told by Brian of BTS to remove the 7.3 cooler completely as it will cause a restriction of the trans fluid flow when using a larger trans cooler with it, thereby causing not as much cooling power that you would get by using your larger cooler (6.0?) by itself. Just something to think about. Brian took my 7.3 off when he installed the 6.0.

Very good point Les, Brian told me the same thing.
His eyes got big when I told him that my stock cooler was still in the truck while he was looking at my Tru-cool.
It was disconncted, I just got lazy and never removed it. he pulled it out for me...
