Hi, I'm new to this part of the forum, been over at the '87-96 section. Anyway, I may be looking at a '99 model Lariat and want some opinions. Things to watch out for with this generation of trucks, what a good price is, ect. I already know the '97-00 5.4 can have spark plug issues, but that's it.

99' still can have the thinner head design that are more prone to spark plug spitting out ( but you're aware of this)...2000 is when Ford redesigned it which helped greatly on that front...not to say that it can't happen after 2000, but greatly reduced.
Looks like it was taken care of...does the seller have past maintenance records available?....if so, that will greatly help you, or the prospective buyer understand what has been done....what maybe need to be done.
best thing to do is to have it checked out prior to purchase & look it over closely. If you have stars in your eyes about it...take a impartial buddy to look it over...ask them to find the flaws....you might be suprised what they find and you don't.
i always look at the inside of the door and the lower seems....if they are starting to rust you know you'll have body work to do in the future..it is area most neglected and show off issues fastest
Thanks. I'm planning on taking my friend or step dad for an extra set of eyes. I ain't real stary-eyed about it, my '92 seems to have blown out the second intake gasket in under a year, so I'm looking at the reliability, leather is just a nice benefit on the side.
Is there anything prone to failure to look-out for on these models?
Whoa, the heads didn't get more threads until '03 and some guys have even had them spit and every single 2V modular can spit one from '92+. For whatever reason '99s have more problems than the other years, they are the first year that had the electronic odo, which can get a bad connection and go out needing to be re-soldered. Also seemed to be more rear window leaks with the '99s for some reason. Windshields can leak leading to the GEM getting wet and causing all kinds of odd electrical gremlins. If you search this forum and others you'll see a pattern with them.

The service manager at our local dealership said that the heads redesigned in 2000 to be thicker for more threads on the plugs. Now may i misunderstood....but we were deep into the discussion ejected plugs.
there is also the COPs getting weak giving a intermittent hesitation, but that is subject to them all, not just 99's
maintain them well and they give ya lots of happy miles

I've always heard either 2000 or 2001. I had a friend have the plug eject about 200yds from the school parkinglot last year and looked into it then.
