Cruise Control Mod

May be playing with fire but here goes:
What I want - the cruise control to hold a steady throttle position instead of steady speed
Why - When towing I don't like the truck trying to maintain speed going up and down hills (or in my case) overpasses. Truck downshifts and tries to speed up on the incline and EGT's go high
An Idea - Rig up electronics (potentiometer, latching relay, etc) to intercept and take over throttle pedal function. Of coarse it would have to deactivate when brake is applied like the regiular CC does now.
How it might work - Push a button to engage potentiometer and dial in the desired resistence/voltage to keep the engine at a certain speed. Hit brakes and it deactivates.

Thoughts? (other than legal ramifications of malfunction and running over Smart cars)

Wouldn't it be easier to kick of the cruise while towing when it's hilly? That way you can kind of gauge when it's about to downshift and back off a bit. It seems you might lose too much speed up the hill and it would downshift anyway. I kind of speed up a bit before the hill starts and back off as I need to keep from down shifting. Or you don't tow in OD when near hills.

Well Steve, I thought about this the last couple of years, was going to try it for this years Myrtle beach trip but not had the time. The only draw back, I think, that it would slow down drastically (MPH) up hill and go like stink down hill.. Almost like putting a brick on your "go" Peddle.. I would like to try it myself... I really dislike it when it jumps out of OD and i am not paying attention.

I do that now, kick out of CC, but it gets old. I have tried keeping my foot at a set point on the go pedal and the truck doesn't slow down too much going up (as I said most of our hills are overpasses) or speed up going down. At least not enough to disrupt traffic behind me.

I figured someone else has thought of this. Now to find the guy who has done it and save me some time.

Use a tune as cruise control. High idle at a liked rpm. Definatly not safe or practical but maybe something to work with or an idea.
