well im having a problem where when im driving my wait to start light will come on and have no clue where abouts to start to fix it and winter is coming so i will be requiring them to be working. My wait to start light will come on when i turn ignition and click off 10 seconds later or until i crank but then will come back on randomly when im driving. What do I have to do to get them fixed up? and ps just bought the truck, a 1983 f250 with the 6.9 and only 61thousand origonal.
on mine i did everything new conectors to the glowplugs new motorcraft glowplugs aka buru german made, new glowplug relay, new controller, my old international controller was still good so i saved it. i paid ten bucs a plug like 65 for the controller napa, i forget the relay price not to much, we made new glow plug conectors ourself n the driveway. now i got an account number at napa, and got another conection at napa too with who do u know , is he working today. ill b back when he is working lol. one note napa new style controller will not activate when engine is warm, meaning u could have a hard start, once its warm leave it running, unless u r parking it for a couple hours unless ur n the north i guess the engine would cool down much faster, im n da south
The glow plugs will cycle on and off after the initial long WTS light goes out. That is normal, and the truck should be given time to warm up.
After the fast idle has stopped and goes to the normal idle speed, it's continuing to cycle randomly? Even when the engine is hot after driving a long time?
If so, you are looking at the GP controller, which will need to be replaced with another, or bypassed to a push button setup.
great info n the top threads dave knows evrything, read top threads over and over i did, im new style 7.3, dave has super info about the 6.9 on there. one time n loisanna i stopped for the nite n jan. off interstate 10, it iced over that nite, and i could not plug n my block warmer as no power outlets. i tried two starts to no go, and i had newer batterys, super cold ice everywhere i new i only had one try left n da batterys, but the motorcraft glowplugs came threw for me on the third try, as i was still 700 miles from home
So how would I go about doing this button? If I can I would love to keep it to where as the light turns on when I push the button but that is it. Pictures discriptions, anything will help greatly.
And do you think all the plugs are burnt out? Also new to this, in winter on mass it starts about 20degrees on a normal morning. So I push the button for 10 seconds then let off, but if I were to cycle twice how long in-between should I wait?
On really cold mornings, you can safely do 15 seconds, and once it's running, you might have to press the button and release a couple times to keep the engine running after it's started, or it can stumble and die.
DO NOT use your block heater on your 83, you can risk cracking the block.
And if it's not in that thread, might try a search in this forum. I do remember coming across on this, but this was last year or so.
The early 1983-1985 6.9's had weaker/thinner block where the block heater is located on the block, and they're at risk of cracking if used. Best thing to do if you really want a block heater, is installed an inline one in the heater hoses.
