And also another question cause we have this thread going.. would a 7.3idi Turbo and all other pars like manafolds and stuff fit and work on my 6.9? And if anyone can explain the button to me, thanks so much
Our truck has had electrical gremlins since we got it. I have actually seen the wait to start light faintly glow at times at night recently since we had a major short/fire at the passenger side battery. With the stock wiring hooked up the glowplug relay ground plug would burn its insulation off during startup!
And you could see the pulsations when running which would get worse when running the blower and some other things. Maybe some melted together wires and/or crazy grounds.
I got so frustrated a few weeks ago I found a basic wiring harness and fusebox at pick and pull and am completely gutting mine to use that one and hopefully all will be well on that front.
We also put a push button start in right away after reading these forums. Our truck has from 380-440 compression and in the winter it gets into the teens. Now with the electrical pump, start time has decreased dramatically!
Having air in the lines and fuel draining back overnight might actually trick you in the morning into thinking your glowplugs aren't good enough! You could be wasting the initial turnovers and glowplugs cycles on just priming the system and even then its like its repurging itself.
So we hit the glowplugs for a count of 8-10 with the pedal down and start it up and it will start within 5 revolutions I would say
And all the plugs are good which will be about 2 years now come winter.
*** Pre '87 Controller, Relay test. ***
The relay is attached to the right (passenger) inner fender and has 4 terminals.
1 large terminal (Input Terminal) goes to full time 12v+. (battery)
The other large terminal (Output Terminal) goes to the glow plugs.
1 small terminal (Power Terminal) is controlled 12v+ from the controller. (Purple wire)
The other small terminal (Ground Terminal) goes to ground. (white with black tracer (I think))
Ensure there is 12v+ to the Input Terminal of the relay.
Ensure Ground is good, both the base and Ground Terminal.
All you need is 2 pieces of wire and a push button. One wire goes from a key-on 12v power source to the button, next wire goes from the button to the small terminal that has the purple wire, as it's described above (disconnect the purple wire).
I'm sure if anyone has any tips, tricks, or upgrades to this, they'll put them up.

Oops I didn't notice the multiple times you asked how to do the glowplug switch I think I got the threads mixed, I could have snapped a picture for you.
Yep that is what I did. I read about people trying to take old controllers out of the engine and having them break and have coolant leak so I didn't disturb it.
So look at that pic and if its hooked up stock the leads should match, follow those directions and you have a manual button for the glowplugs. Also your stock dash light will light up when you hit the button. Get a momentary switch for $5 from the local kragen, etc.
So I got it wired in and I have not driven/started it yet because still waiting on correct injector return lines, but when ever I turn the key to 'on' now the wts light is elumanated. How can I get it so it just lights up when I push the button? Because I don't don't it on all the time and I don't want it coming on and off when I was driving like how it was before the button install.
