my oil pressure is normal when starting and moving but when i stop at a light or sign the pressure drops off and wont read on the guage
I am new here and have alot of questions
we bought the truck a week ago after replaceing all front seals and bearings includeing axle joints
the wife took carb off due to a couple leaks when it was put back on she ended up putting 2 gaskets on the power valve and it leaked out in to the intake not realizing this we drove it for about 5 miles and then started hearing a real quiet knock only when coasting not accelerating or decelerating just in between about 40 mph
and pressure started droping when stopped
there is no knock when idling no lifters no bad noises at all
i am hopeing it is only the oil pump but how do i check the rod bearings
to be sure just wiggle them lol or is there a different way?
thanks for reading and any thing that might help find the problem will help thanks again
first thing to do is get a real oil pressure gauge like an autometer mechanical gauge.
The stock gauge is not good at all. if it is starting to knock i would not drive it untill
i check the main and Rod bearings.
What viscosity oil are you running in it? I run 10w40 in my 460 because it's up there in miles and it would significantly drop pressure when hot running on 10w30.
You could also pull your distributor and prime the oil pump by hand with a socket taped (for safety so you don't loose the socket) to an extension with a drill. You should feel a good bit of resistance if your oil pump isn't worn out.
I'm also with i-w on the gauge - take out your instrument cluster and look at the printed circuit board on the back. The circuits are made of copper and like to corrode where the gauge attaching nuts make contact. You could also test the gauge with a continuity tester and the needle should peg up and down as you make contact with it.
Drain the oil and pull the pan back off. Get some plastigauge in the correct range for these engines. Don't remember the specs, but I'm sure they can be found on the net. Remove a cap and place the plastic strand in between the crank and bearing. Torque the cap and then remove again. Check the clearance with the comparison strip on the packaging. This will tell you what your clearance is and whether you got the correct bearings to put back in it.
Hope that helps. There is really no way to check from the outside. Sucks, but that is how it is.
