E4OD, just looking for some extra input/experience

Me again, a Brit ( living in Britain ) owner of an F250 7.3 idi 1990, with the ( it seems ) not so popular ED04.

Not long had the truck, its a weird dually conversion. The transmission was rebuilt about 1k miles ago by a company ( with the previous owner ). Getting the usual hard shifts, confusion when flooring for kickdown ( usually tries to go down a gear not up, or maybe its the OD coming on when it should already be on - if someone can say what the RPM should be at 55mph, that will help ).

I've recently placed a new TPS on, and right now I am at the stage of pulling all the plugs off and checking the wiring. Everything is as it should be from what I can see. The fault light was on, fault code was the TPS, changed the TPS, lights off, but still not shifting right and I've adjusted the TPS several times to get 1.2v in idle position ( hoping thats correct ).

Any extra thoughts ? I'll clean up all the connectors and tidy to wiring up, but my next thought is going to be the shift solenoids - which I assume ( in my very limited knowledge ) will mean draining the oil out and removing the pan ? That won't be so bad though, but getting a new solenoid pack will be !

Any thoughts, tests, ideas, tech details, links etc - all really appreciated - thanks !

What do you mean it tries to go down a gear when you go wide open? It's supposed to go down a kick, hence "kickdown". UpShifting is 1 > 2 > 3 > 4. Downshifting is 4 > 3 > 2 > 1.

If you replaced the TPS without resetting the computer, try disconnecting the batteries for ~10 minutes or so.

TPS setting should be between 0.9 and 0.99v at idle and not over 1.0v. The E4OD is completely computer controlled so any and all sensor problems will affect trans operation. Wacky and hard shifting is common when the speed input is lost or becomes flaky, trucks with electronic speedos you often see that on the dash, but your truck should have a mechanical speedo(cable driven off the trans) and the computer will take it's speed input from either the RABS/VSS sensor or an electrical output on the transmission.. if so equipped. There are combination electrical/mechanical speedo drivers so maybe that's what you have, or maybe the computer did get it's speed input from the rear axle originally but when the dually conversion ws done that was lost and the PO didn't realize he needed to provide an alternate speed input for the computer, so the trans has been acting up ever since.

Opps, my bad sorry I wrote too fast, upshifting is happening - or it feels like it anyway - press down and it lingers and most often tries to go up ( revs drop right down and feels like its in top gear/pulling tons in weight type feeling etc ). Thanks for correcting that

I have read a whole load of threads saying 1.2v for TPS - just goes to show ! I did wonder because its max is barely 4.1 volts when turned the other way. I'll get to setting it right asap. Thanks for that !

I took the speed sensor off the diff last night, but I assumed it was just for the ABS ? I can see the mechanical speedo cable coming out the drivers side of the transmission, tach and speedo always steady, no jumping or dancing around. O/D will go on and off when the button is pressed no problem.

Batteries have been off many times due to a dead alternator ( 3G for conversion just arrived ), so the computer should be reset by now - fault lights gone out as said. I'll try the TPS asap, any other sensors I can pull off and check/clean etc ?

Thanks everyone ! It all really helps !!

PS) long shot, but if anyone knows the lengths of battery cable I might need in total, I want to either make them up myself or get a company to do it, but I can't work out how much cable I will need to do the lot - just wondered in case anyone has had all the cables out before, or got pics or diagrams etc - its all new to me you see. No worries if not, I'll just pull the lot out and measure it up in a few days.

Well I do know the E4OD shift logic will unlock the torque converter, make a shift, than re-lock it. That might be what you're feeling.
