E4OD troubles
I've been having an intermittent soft shift problem that is gettin worse. I can't even tell when it kicks out of OD anymore. I need to know if this is a transmission that I could rebuild my self with a good manual or if I should send it out. It may be a bad sensor as some days it shifts hard, and others really soft. It also seems to work better when the conditions are cool and not humid. Any and all help is much appreciated.

e40d trannys have a small plastic gear that activate the speed sensor. its located at the end of the speedometer cable, where the cable goes into the trans. mine is near the rear, on the drivers side, almost at the top. its a poor design cosidering the rpms generated, and the aftermarket parts are no better. try this maintainence before you go wild on that tranny. they are real expensive. good luck

'92 and later trucks do not use a spedometer gear/cable arragnement. They are all electronic. So that cant be the problem.
Hard or soft shifts are most likely caused by high or low oil pressure, which is controlled by the computer. Get the computer codes scanned before you do anything else.

I'd look into the AIR and engine condition first, as the computer depends on readings overall to control the demands of the tranny. It sounds like a sensor problem being intermittent.
