This is the most economical Ford Focus ever – and the most efficient non-hybrid family car in the whole of Europe.
The new Econetic model will make its debut at the Frankfurt Motor Show next week featuring a host of tweaks to help its 1.6-litre diesel engine return 83.1mpg and emit just 89g/km for road tax-free motoring.
Those incredible figures eclipse the Focus' closest rival, the Volkswagen Golf Bluemotion, which does 74mpg and emits 99g/km.
On sale in the middle of next year, the new Focus Econetic gets a 104bhp 1.6-litre turbodiesel which boasts stop-start and a clever energy efficient alternator. Inside, there's a dash-mounted Eco Mode, which helps the owner to drive more efficiently, along with a gearshift indicator.

That proves how stupid our gov is. Cars like that would save our country billions. As long as big oil has the politictions in their back pocket we're doomed.
I thought European emission standards were actually pretty strict, maybe moreso than EPA.
I've always heard that US automakers hesitate to bring diesel powered vehicles here because they think they won't sell. Even though VW and others have shown that they will.

I was reading an article the other day (about the rumored diesel powered F150) and there was mention why diesel engines are pretty much only in the 3/4 ton and up trucks here in the states. The general public views diesel as a dirty fuel/engine...and in the recent years the rise in fuel price pretty much scares off anyone that might be interested in it for the economy. If I was in the marketing department of Ford (assuming this thing meets EPA/USDOT mandates) I'd bring several of those dudes over here and point out just exactly how much better than the Prius the fuel mileage is with this car. With mileage like that, it wouldn't take long to pass the Prius crowd and recover the extra price in fuel. But then I'm not in marketing or have an MBA; so I'm not qualified to make those kinds of calls.
I shouldn't pick on the EPA as much as I do, but they don't help the perception the general public has of diesel engines. And those guys out there that feel they need to "roll the coal" all the time...your not helping. I'll get off my soapbox before I get into trouble again.
I would seriously consider trading in our VW TDI for that Ford. I'm from the UK and ran a little 1.8 D Ford escort van. That thing gave me 40 + fully loaded with 4 solid timber ladders.
