ok i have a 85 f150 4wd 351w 4bbl truck. while figureing out some fuel issues a new problem has arose. when attempting to start truck it engages the starter and keeps it engaged until you cut the truck off. have replaced starter solenoid and electrical ignition switch. i believe it may be the key switch bad.has anyone had this happen and if so how do you change the switch? does the steering wheel have to be removed?
i do have a tilt column but i can see the rod working like i believe it should. it is almost like the key switch doesnt spring back after you let it go when starting the truck
The key cylinder is just a mechanical device. Get yourself a can of spray lube with the little plastic tube. Stick the tube in where the key goes in and lube it. I guess spray white lithium grease will work just fine.
Check the rod all the way down to the actual switch and make sure it's not binding anywhere.
Lastly, give the switch that's mounted on the top of the steering column a shot of WD-40, and work it some. I'd disconnect the battery while you do this so that you can work the switch real good. I used WD-40 on mine, and it freed it right up.
After re-reading you post I see that you can turn the key to the OFF position and the truck will stop and the starter will also stop. Correct?
you have replaced the ignition switch and did this problem start and that is why you replaced the switch or did you replace the switch and this problem start?
If it is the latter I would say the the switch is miss-aligned!
If it is the former I would say the old switch failed and the new switch is still miss-aligned.
The Key switch does nothing more than move the actuator rod and that moves the switch.
Yea id say its the return spring in the ignition switch , but if were talking about the one bolted on the back of the column and its been changed. Then that's not the problem unless its miss-aligned like Labs said.
