I am thinking about swaping the axle on my F6 with the rear axle from a dodge motorhome with the same bolt pattern. I think this would give a better all around ratio and eleminate the annoying axle shifting. What do you guys think? Does anyone know where I can get one?
P.S. I need one more 19.5 inch 5 lug wheel if anyone has one to spare. Thanks!
I dont see why that axle swap wouldn't work? may just need to move or adjust the spring pads is all?? but I have not looked or measured anything either.
I was also wondering about doing a similar swap on my 52 F6, but then figured I would drive it first once it's all back together and see if I would even dare go faster than the stock rear end would allow???
anyway, I know of a somewhat private yard here in Salt lake that the guy has a few older RV's with that lug pattern, as I took a set of 19.5's off it plus another one (which was a ford box Van.
I don't really want to sell one out of my complete set of six wheels but if you cant find one, I'm sure I could go out there and pull just one off the next RV ?
Where are you located? Maybe someone closer can help?
I've looked at an old motor home with the Dana 70 you're talking about with the same thing in mind. There's a lot of stuff you'd have to do away with and move, like shock mounts and pads like Josh said, but it should work great. I'd say watch Craig's List to find one.
Exciting updates! A guy here in Colorado (im in denver) from one of truckdog's links has 3 wheels he wants to get rid of. He also has a 49 F5 with the single speed rear axle and just so happens to want a 2 speed axle. He also wants my dump equipment and bed that I wanted to get rid of! Does anyone know how the gear ratio of the F5 axle compares to the dodge? is there any way to change it? Thanks!
I just did a Google search to see if I could find you a Dana 70 ratio, but I'm not certain they would all have been the same. It looks likely the ratio would be a 4.11 or 4.88, either one much more road worthy than your stock axle. Also, there are replacement gear sets available for the more modern Dana 70 that would permit you to set it up to your own preferences. Stu
On my trucks with Timkens the numbers are stamped into the housings. For instance, mine are 34/7 which divides out to 4.857/1, or a 4.86 ratio. The other way to check would be to lift one rear wheel off the ground (in neutral with the other wheels blocked) and turn it one rotation while counting the rotations of the drive shaft. It helps to chalk the tire and drive shaft for accuracy. That gets you close. Stu
Good Deal on finding those wheels close by! Stu knows where all the good stuff is from Coast to Coast
Every once in a while I'll check the local classified ads for older RV's I have seen a few go for free (and a bunch for $200-500 range.
If you find something like that fairly close to you, you could get the rear end you need, more wheels to sell? or use on your next project
maybe a decent engine/trans to sell to help offset the initial cost and scrap whatever else you can't sell from it??
If I didn't have any neighbors I probably would have or had had an RV or two...
Ok so I had the guy check and his F5 rear axle has a 6.4 gearing ratio. Is this really worth switching or should I keep looking for a dana 70? Is there a place I can get different gears for the F5 axle? We should be doing the swap mid october.

Howdy,
Did you say that you have a 2 speed?
If you do I'm not getting why you want to swap it out unless you want the better brakes and a higher ratio.
If you're going to a Timken single speed, that is a 6.4:1 (I thought they were 6.80:1), it would be so close to your 2 speed that you're not really getting much.
You don't HAVE to shift the 2 speed to use it. I am going to use a 5.80:1/8.11:1 2 speed in my 55 F-600 and use an automatic trans. I don't plan to be shifting the axle "on-the-fly" at all.........but I do plan to use the low range when it's convenient for towing etc...
The other thing is that if you want to change transmissions and you DO NOT have a parking brake on the back of the tras, a new axle with provisions for a wheel e-brake will prevent you having to come up with some other parking brake. system. (my E4OD is out of an F-450 and I have the trans mounted parking brake)
I just took the truck for a spin after replacing the water hoses that failed. How exactly does the 2 sp axle work? I tried to put it into high while stopped and go from there but the truck would not move, and I cant seem to get it to shift while moving either.
