tempermental radio

I have a 1996 Dodge Ram Charger pickup and I'm having issues with the radio. The radio worked fine when we first got it around 3 yrs ago, then it started working only part of the time. My husband would pound on the dashboard (not the best idea, i know) and most times the radio would come on. Now it does nothing and I wanted to see if there's something I could to fix on my own. Or at least have a better understanding of how it's broken so I don't get ripped off at the mechanic's. Any suggestions????

Is there any way to test out the speakers to see if they're the cause of my radio issues??

I'm not trying to be a smart a$$, but I would think a Dodge forum might be better for your question, those guys will know the quirks of that system..

My suggestion is to pull the radio out of the dash and check it for loose connections..
