1991 e4od tranny problem

hey yall, i have a 1991 f250 460 with a damn e4od transmission. i bought it about 2.5 months ago and since ive owned it i have noticed that some times it shifts hard from first to second gear and times wont shift out of first at all. some time it does this and some times not. i took it to a local tranny shop and they told me the tranny was burnt. so i went and bought a good used tranny with like 130k and installed it and its still doin the same damn thing!! so i took it to another tranny place and told me its some thing electrical and they said it would cost any where from 2500 on up! i only paid 800 for the truck and 850 for the newer transmission. i cant afford to put that kinda money in it. any ideas would be greatly appreciated! thanks yall!!

It probably is the solenoid pack, it isn't THAT expensive, more like $200 (just a guess), and i think you can replace it by taking out the pan of the tranny.

Ford Fuel Injection » How To Run a Self-Test Here is a link on how to check for any trouble codes, maybe do that first.
The transmission range sensor is on the drivers side of the trans with the shifter linkage connected to it. When you swapped transmissions which TRS did you use (original one or new one)?

If it is not the TR sensor that Lazy K said above then it may be you have bad VSS (the item that the speedometer cable plugs into on the side of the transmission on the tail shaft).

My '94 is doing the same (hard/late shifts). I read on here somewhere that the TPS could have something to do with it. I havent had time to get mine yet. Replacement TPS is $50ish at my local bumper to bumper.

Of course check your codes and do the other differentials first but...

I alway like to interject with the fact that auto transmissions can shift erratically if the valve body is all gummed up with old tranny fluid that hasn't been changed in a long **** time. IE:Sometimes it's an easy fix to change tranny fluid and tranny filter. Just a thought to go the cheap route b4 buying $200 parts (it's preventative maintence that should be done anyhow...) I've seen plenty of posts saying thanks for telling me to change my fluid before rebuilding/fixing expensive items. I guess people sometimes forget that there are more fluids to change than just the oil, antifreeze, and washer fluid.

Mine is a diesel so its a little different, But I adjusted myTPS and it smoothed out the shifts. When it stopped shifting I changed the shift position sensor on the linkage and that fixed the not shifting problem.

My old truck use to do that it ended up being the mlps on the side of the trans. Fixed everything. Check the connect to this sensor it sucks at keeping water dirt mud out. When I replaced my sensor I had to buy a new plug an rewire it cause it corroded.
