f150 trouble!

howdy new here hope im in the right place. I have a 1999 f150 long bed triton v-8 4x4 10800 miles. When I am going down the road I hear a rumbleing and scrapping niose. When i am idolling i dont hear it. but I know it gets louder when I speed up. This all started two days ago. Could it be my transmition? Iam disabled and know very little about trucks so I cant lay down and look under the truck. And after walking around the truck I dont see anything diffrent all this noise is coming from the rear end. Any info or ideas would be a big help!!! thank you for your time.

Could be any number of things. You might've picked up some debris and now you're dragging it down the highway.

Someone needs to take a look under that truck. Can you have a friend do it for you?

I agree. Dont stress to much yet. You probably just got some stuff in your wheel hubs. Try to have someone pressure wash BEHIND all your wheel really well, and even go as far as removing the wheel to look. Do you notice that the problem gets worse around turns? Oh yeah, and check your drive shaft for and debris on it. If it was your transmission I would think that it would only happen in certain gears, but my transmission knowledge is limited... Hmmm then again, it could be your rear end, but on a ford its unlikely.

My son in law got under my truck and checked out everything from bumper to bumper. He told me that every thing looked ok to him.

Hmmm this is tricky... Is there anymore details you could provide about it? Knowing whether is gets worse when turning, or any change at all, would eliminate a lot of things.

The only thing I can tell you is that it gets louder when I acelerate. Turning dosent make any differance the truck makes the noise going up hill but not when I coast down the other side. And I dont hear it in park motor running.

so its not related to ground speed as much as motor speed ? I would guess more in the line of engine ping or knock ? At a constant 50 MPH, no noise? Stomp on the throttle and you hear it ? Coast at 50 MPH and it goes away ?

Couldnt be engine ping. He would feel that as much as he would hear it if it was that bad. Plus Im pretty sure he would have thrown a code. Its really starting to sound like transmission or rear end now. Maybe tire balance?.... I doubt it though. This is why ford has such a hate cult, not because they are any less quality than any other truck. They just break in the most unorthodox way. Why did they design some of the things the way they did???l I dont know if this year for came out with grease "zurks" on the axles but it couldnt hurt to have your son-on-law hit them really well with a grease gun if they are there.

Drive it up to 50mph then shift it to neutral and turn the engine off. Just coast for a little while. If the noise still persists it is the trans or rear end. If the trans, the noise wil be quite evident right there next to you in the cab. If not it's the rear.

Now this could be a U-joint too. If the needle bearings have siezed and fractured it will make a terrible noise like that and you had better replace them immeadeatley or else you'll throw the driveshaft.

Drive your truck on level pavement, put the emergency brake on and put it in neutral then have someone crawl under there and grab the driveshaft and twist it back and forth. When they inspect each yoke they need to have a hand or finger on it to check for movement. Fractured needles don't always produce a lot of slop but there will be about 1/8" of play in it.
