hey i just bought some new bfg mud terrian 315/75/16. i was wondering how much psi should i run in the tires. i know how important it is to keep the pressure in it at the right psi. how much should i psi should i run? by the way the truck i have is a 1999 f-250 4x4 psd
Do the chalk test. Pump them up to the psi listed on the door jam sticker. Then go to a flat area of pavement. Take a piece of chalk and make a line about an inch thick across each tire. Then drive on it so the line goes around a few times. Then inspect the line. You want it to be rubbed as evenly as possible across the tire. If it's rubbed too much in the middle vs the outsides, than you need to back off some pressure (1 psi at a time when you get close). If it's worn off on the outside more than the middle, you're pressure is too low, need to add some.
I second GT's response(again). I would add that once you do the chalk test, use that as your baseline and keep checking. I do the test once a month, but I'm a fanatic - you could get away with checking every oil change or so. I would also advise using a tread depth gauge regularly. I use mine when fueling - checking the variations in depth across the tread on all four tires takes less than two minutes, and will alert you to any minor wear problems long before they become big problems.
