I got aches in places that I didn't think WERE places! We did get the trans disconnected and the engine on the stand - we just ran out of gas to take the oil pan off. Did notice we need to fix a leak at the turbo pedestal and I figure we'll gut it while its off. Easy to get after everything when its out. One of the guys had the idea of making the front end tip up like a OTR truck hood. Not sure we'll tackle that but definately is an interesting idea.

as preventive maintenance you might want to re-oring the oil cooler while it is out. It's not tough while it is in but heck..it's there right now and the orings are probably rock hard.

IMHO If faced with the same siutation, I'd be be pulling the motor to remedy the missing cooling jet. I don't like to take chances and running with one missing would be pushing my luck. I can't say I'd do a complete overhaul on it. But depending on the conditions I'd see after opening it up, I'd make that decision at that time.
Aren't you the guy who did a complete trans rebuild because of a loose VB bolt. J/K of course.

I believe center support bearing bolts qualify as being more than "valve-body bolts"!

Faced with a similar situation, I might do as Roland did.

I saw a core on Craigslist a couple of months ago and was tempted.

Marge would have killed me, so I didn't think twice.

It was a loose forward clutch feed bolt and I did have to remove the VBs to get to it. I did slip the clutches pretty bad to get my truck back into the driveway with trailer in tow. If I hadn't tore into it, I wouldn't have found the worn clutch teeth and did the upgrades I have now.

If I find a good deal on a spare engine, I know I won't be thinking twice. I'm gonna ****** that sucker up.

Got the pan off late yesterday - found 1 jet in the pan + the one already missing. Piston bottoms look slightly darker than the ones w/ jets but are otherwise ok. Probably pull the heads later today to see what shape the tops are in.

Makes me think - lose one, you'll probably lose more. Beginning to wonder if certain year/SN engines are more prone vs others. We've got 8 and only 3 (that we know of) have missing jets. Since the heads have to come off anyway we're going to put in new GP's and do the injector o-rings & cups. Might as well since #*#:;'""""://!,!!! thing is apart anyway. I like 7.3's but have to admit this is a PITA

Last name is Miller, too. We have friends that refer to us as the M&Ms.

It really worked out for us one time about thirty years ago, too.

She and her first husband had gone through a bankruptcy, long before I knew her. After we were married, we needed something that required a credit check with TRW. Since the input criteria was last name, first three of first name, and address, MY credit report spit out when hers was requested. It was spotless, too, and we got whatever it was that we needed (might have even been the home loan).

Over the years, we've had dogs named Meus (Moose), Max, and Murphy, and currently have a fourteen-year-old named Meg. Except for Meus, they were all just coincidental.

Now, back to a discussion about piston cooling jets that fall out by themselves.......

I have seen no rhyme or reason to model year or serial breaks, but i have seen it more in higher mileage (170k and above) but it seems to show up more frequently with 4x4 models, keep in mind this is just what I've seen in a single region with a small sampling of trucks (around 50) ^so my theory is just a theory that it is a vibration issue and the rougher ride of the 4x4 just seems to speed up the process, as well as the addition of tuners and the propensity for those engines to be ran at a higher RPM on a more consistent basis than a stock engine! This is why I have mine balanced
