GREAT PICTURES...Are the cooling jets a press fit in? Also, is that a crack just above the piston in your picture?

It's no sweat to me! I could have never retired at 44 if it wasn't for shade tree mechanics! He did **** off Monty though, hasn't touched his milk bone all morning I better check his gauges....lol
Jim & fat mad Monty
Working on the big cranes tends to destroy the body very early! I spent most of my working life as a factory feild service engineer, traveled the worlds most remote mining and oil fields, construction projects, refinery shut downs ect... Spent the last 20 years living in forign s...t holes for 9 to ten months at a time, ^so I could do it now I can take a 2 month contract once a year when I get bored! My wife works part time to pay the little things but over all it's great! I get to take the kids to school and pick them up every day! Parent conferences, foot ball, orchestra! I am Mr Mom and I love it. I have one more GE contract in sept. I'll be in Japan for 6 weeks, I was there in apr & may, and then I wont be able to work any nuc sites again lifetime limit will be reached, but the pay is phenomenal I just can't pass it up!
Yeah, that's a cracked block, Neal.
If it was a gasser I would say they had the timing way too advanced, but this could have been from too big of injectors, start of injection too early and too low of RPM.
Basically too much timing again stressed the main bearing.
That's my take just from looking at the picture.
It could also be the aftermath of a new window installed in the block too.
I cant say anything about that part in bold... Got be banned last time we had that discussion...

After well over a million miles of DRIVING, WRENCHING, and DIOGNOSTIC'S on these motors (this PARTICULAR motor) I really cant see what I said that "Pissed" you off...

Had my first lower back surgery at 17... Second at 21... Third at 30...
Enough of the sibling rivalry! This is the Brotherhood, but let's not argue like "brothers". This isn't a competition. Let's work together to help the OP to come up with best solution to the problem.
IMHO If faced with the same siutation, I'd be be pulling the motor to remedy the missing cooling jet. I don't like to take chances and running with one missing would be pushing my luck. I can't say I'd do a complete overhaul on it. But depending on the conditions I'd see after opening it up, I'd make that decision at that time.
Sorry to hear abought the back surgeries! I just had my stimulator batteries changed yesterday ^so I definatley understand where you come from there, that's a direct consequence of my 25 years of 16 hour days in remote locations is I no longer feel the lower half of my body, I can function with relatively little pain and actually walk with out a cane I can work when I want to but choose not to! What pissed me off was the you must be made of money crap, I have to fight for every cent to just like the rest of of us, even more ^so that my money has to hold out for the next 40 years that's why I take a proactive approach on everything I do! Sorry I got ^so steamed up it probably wasn't warranted, and I'll do better next time!

Very interesting indeed. I hope the year model thing is a coincidence. I have an '01 and don't need another thing to worry about. When are my piston cooling jets going to fall out/break? I'll just keep driving mine 'til they do and then upgrade accordingly. I'll have a very good reason.

You mean you can't agree to disagree sometimes?

Holy CRAP!!! I've never been under the knife for anything except to remove a granuloma from my right index finger.
I think if I had suffered those types of injuries at that young of an age, I would have pursued a different career.
But that's just me.
That sort of challenge to getting the job done would have scared me off to do something else.
Yea nice pics of the jets out. So has anyone had the bolt come out or is it just the tube. With this motor we just pulled maybe I should weld em up to be safe?
Getting back on subject (sorry have to) I did some research and called a couple of navistar mechs I know - it isn't all "gloom & doom" but it aint rosy either - here's what we decided - the oldest of the 3 trucks missing the jet(s) needs work on the oil pan anyway so, we're going to pull the motor for a looky. This truck isn't the one that started the thread but has been missing at least 1 jet for > 1yr and is used fairly hard everyday (hauls hay to our beef cattle) buddy of mine @ WBD bet me a case of my favorite "beverage" that we'll find a scorched but otherwise intact piston - he suggested (I agreed) that we replace it unless its not that bad. He says he's seen engines that have been missing jets for 10's thous miles w/o issue and he's seen others that blew up a week later. His point was it all depends on your app & how you drive it. Drive like mario a and you'll prob blow it up - drive like the proverb "old lady" and you might go years. We're going to base the direction we go on the other 2 trucks on what we find on this one - we'll probably have the eng out by mon at the latest - stay tuned
